Der Regisseur Vladimír Sís (1925-2001) und der Kameramann Josef Vani (1927-2009) wurden im Jahre 1953 vom "Tschecheslowakischen Armeefilm" nach China geschickt, um dort einen Dokumentarfilm über den Bau der Straße von der Provinz Szetschuan bis in die Hauptstadt Tibets zu drehen. Während der Dreharbeiten mit der Filmkamera haben sie zwischen 1954 und 55 auch Hunderte von Fotoaufnahmen gemacht.
