Best known as a Washington painter, Leon Berkowitz studied at the Art Students League before moving to Washington, D.C. Berkowitz taught throughout much of his career, serving as the chairman of The Corcoran Gallery's School of Art department of painting. Along with his first wife, he established the Washington Workshop Center for the Arts. After the closing of the workshop in 1956, Berkowitz's work became more abstracted, working with fields of color and light. His work can be found in the collections of the Hirschhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, the National Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The Phillips Collection, the Des Moines Museum, and the Phoenix Art Museum, among others. There is one copy of this catalogue found in Worldcat, and that copy is in Europe. Published to accompany and exhibition which was held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art from Sept. 14 to Oct. 21, 1973 and the Everson Museum of Art from Feb. 21 to March 21, 1974. There is text, professional information, and a short poem excerpt within this catalogue. Very scarce.
