This 11 1/8" x 14 3/4", 62 leaves/ 124 pages scrapbook was put together by Margaret Sloan Colt, who was an American Red Cross ranking official, who was located in London during World War II. Written on the first page is "Arrived in London October 15th, 1942," and dates the scrapbook from Oct. 1942-July 1943. It is jam packed and includes letters, secret documents, invitations, seating arrangements, itinerary, ID and membership cards, photographs, magazine articles, and newspaper clippings. Margaret Sloan Colt served as Assistant Director of Volunteer Special Services for the American Red Cross. She began serving the American Red Cross during the First World War. During World War II, she was transferred to Great Britain and occupied a similar position. Sloan Colt quickly ascended the ranks to Director of Staff Welfare, and became a member of the National Committee on Volunteer Service for the American Red Cross in Great Britain. Margaret Sloan Colt's husband was the grandson of the inventor of the Colt .45, a family with a long history in the U.S. military. Colt was elbow to elbow with many high ranking members of society both diplomats and otherwise. She dines with Eleanor Roosevelt, William Howard Taft the 2nd, the Churchills, General Dwight D Eisenhower, Ambassador Biddle, and at Buckingham Palace with many esteemed royalty. As Director of Volunteer Special Services for ARC, and critical advisor to British and American soldiers, Margaret Sloan Colt was revered. Her superior in America sent her praises "Harvey's gain is my loss. We are all proud of you and will miss you." - Pauline Davis. More praise for Margaret, includes this letter of approval for Margaret to take a month leave from Great Britain in order to meet her first-born grandchild. Commissioner Harvey Gibson said of Margaret Sloan Colt, "It was helpful to her to have something definite to start with, and she has never deviated a particle form the original plan other than to add continuously new responsibilities as they have developed and as we have discussed them together, but the most important thing of it all is that she has really done marvelous work for the Red Cross, conscientiously, unselfishly and effectively, and what is more since she has been here she has never on a single occasion been a problem in any respect in connection with any incident or in any part of her activities. She has endeared herself to all of our friends in other societies as well as to all important people in our organizations, and I just could didn't face trying to break someone else in to trader her place with the important activities that I know are before us." In her position, Sloan Colt was privy to state secrets and official state reports. Several documents and invitations herein are labeled secret with the intention of keeping such detail confidential. A letter to ARC Chairman Norman H. Davis dated January 25, 1943 is one such document. This letter addresses the objectives of the American Red Cross' cooperation and role in Great Britain i.e. to assist with communications to U.S. officials and civilians; to support the health and morale of soldiers at recreational centers, hospitals, club-mobiles, AERO clubs, and aviation centers; to provide accounting services; PR; transportation; overall welfare, etc. Sloan Colt preserved countless newspaper clippings of reports on the war, the American Red Cross, the W.V.S., the death of Lieutenant General Frank Maxwell Andrews, German bombs over London, allied efforts, political prisoners, and Mrs. Sloan Colt's visits around Great Britain in A.R.C. capacity, etc. Many, not all, of the articles are dated with handwritten note. According to the New York Times, on top of her other responsibilities. "Mrs. Colt spends her spare time as chairman of the Fire Watching Exemption Committee and making speeches which she hopes will cement British-American friendship further". And three days earlier, the Evening Star wrote of her (on June 18, 1943): "She visited 51 Red Cross service clubs throughout Great Britain. [In conjunction with the Women's Voluntary Service] She saw the workings of the canteens, the Aero Clubs, the Club-mobiles and the rest homes . Mrs. Colt saw, too, the bomb shelters." There are approximately 60 photographs in total throughout, including commercial photos, real photo postcards and professional photographs. Margaret Sloan Colt is pictured next to Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt at the Washington Club; Mrs. Churchill; General Armstrong; Former prime minister of Poland, General Sikorsky. Other photographs include photographs of soldiers at bases around Great Britain and enjoying the services of club-mobiles. The majority of materials are glued to the page. A few items are held with corner tab, one item is stapled to page. Some packets of documents contain a staple. As to be expected, newspaper clippings have stained the page. The spine cloth is exposed. Otherwise, it is complete and in good condition.
