Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. 175pp. Illus. in text. White dj just slightly creased and duty. An absorbing collection of letters by Joseph Whitney of Lake Zurich, Illinois, sent to his family before and during the Civil War. Attractively illustrated with original pictures of the period, the book offers vivid insights into the personal reactions of an educated farmer-soldier to the events of his time as he views American society and army life from the bottom, rather than the top. Many common soldiers did not understand what was going on and the hardships they suffered affected their will to sacrifice and the ability to fight. Six months after the 96th Regiment was mustered in, only 300 of the original 980 men were fit for duty. The letters record the thoughts of humble farmers at war, skilfully edited by Professor Snetsinger. Index.
