Libro
Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Good. Nestled in the bucolic village of Farmington, Connecticut, at the summit of 152 hilltop acres, sits what many architectural historians consider to be the finest Colonial Revival house in the United States. The 33,000-square-foot Hill-Stead was built for Alfred Pope, a wealthy Cleveland industrialist looking for an East Coast country estate to house his world-class collection of French impressionist art. The house was designed by his daughter, Theodate, a self-trained architect of considerable talent and ambition at a time when women of her class were expected to focus on family and social status. In the spring of 1901, Alfred and Ada Pope moved into their 'great new house on a hilltop,' as American novelist and occasional houseguest Henry James would later describe it. Just as impressive are Hill-Stead's grounds, designed in consultation with landscape architect Warren H. Manningfeaturing miles of dry-laid stone walls, lawns, meadows, and woodlandsthe crowning jewel of which is the sunken garden designed for Theodate by her friend Beatrix Farrand. When Theodate died in 1946, her will stipulated that the contents of the house never be moved, lent, or sold. Today, it is maintained along with the grounds as a not-for-profitmuseum. Hill-Stead is the first comprehensive monograph on this classic American home. Editor James F. O'Gorman combines gorgeous color photographs of the house's architecture, art, and furnishings with the latest historical scholarship. The nineteen period rooms presented in situ include paintings by Cassatt, Degas, Manet, Monet, and Whistler; Japanese woodblock prints; and works on paper by Whistler, Piranesi, Durer, and Millet. Furnishings, including original Chippendale, Sheraton, and Empire-period antiques are all thereright down toTheodate's parrot, stuffed but still charming in his pagoda cage in her morning room. The family silver and china can be viewed in the kitchen, and monogrammed bath towels still hang over the huge porcelain tubs. Hill-Stead includes a long-overdue reappraisal of the design contributions of Theodate Pope Riddle. The design of Hill-Stead, long considered to be largely the work of the firm McKim Mead and White, is revealed to be the work of one of this country's earliest important women architects. Hill-Stead features a preface by architect Robert A. M. Stern. Book has slight sun damage on cover.

Prima edizione
1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, FULL VOLUME, OF ESTERMANN, FRISCH, & STERN'S 1931 "CONFIRMATION OF THE DE BROGLIE RELATION TO AN ACCURACY OF 1%" (Zare, Otto "Stern and the Double Bank Shot", Z. Phys. D - Atoms, Molecules and Clusters 10, 377, 1988). One year earlier, Estermann and Stern's 1930 paper, "Beugung von Molekularstrahlen" (Zeitschrift für Physik, Bd. 61, pp. 95-125, 1930) "found that the intensity of the scattered beam recorded as a function of angle showed clearly discernible diffraction maxima" and was an important step towards their 1931 experiment. We offer that work separately. Refining their 1930 efforts, Estermann, Frisch and Stern, in 1931 and in this paper, were able to narrow "the He atom velocity distribution using a velocity selector consisting of a concentric pair of rotating chopper wheels. In this way, Estermann et al. were able to confirm the de Broglie relation to an accuracy of 1%" (Zare). Their paper, however, also "appears to be the first double surface scattering experiment. In this experiment, a beam of He atoms is first scattered off one LiF crystal surface; a diffracted beam, selected in direction, is allowed to impinge on a second LiF crystal surface; and the intensity of the resulting diffracted beam from the second scattering event is then recorded. The concept is very appealing. The first surface scattering event prepares a velocity selected beam of He atoms from the incoming Maxwellian distribution of incident beam particles; the second surface scattering event analyzes the prepared distribution as to how monochromatic (monoenergetic) it is [16]. Clearly this is an experimental tour de force when it is recognized that this study was carried out more than fifty years ago, long before ultra-high vacuum conditions (pressures less than 10 -9 Torr) could be routinely achieved, let alone measured!" ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer. Full volume, 846 pages, fully indexed. Though bound in blue buckram, it bears no library stamps or numbers inside or out. (9 x 6.5 inches; 225 x 163mm). Very slight scuffing at the edges; tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and clean inside and out. Near fine.
