Vintage photograph of Chubby Checker and his wife Catharina Lodders doing the twist, 1981. Photograph with wax pencil annotations in the margins of the recto, and the ink annotation of "Credit: Steve Goldblatt" and an "Aug 18 1981" stamp on the verso. In 1964, 223 year-old Checker and the 21 year-old Lodders, a Dutch model and Miss World 1962, married, three years before the US Supreme Court struck down laws banning interracial marriage. The couple had to travel out of Pennsylvania to New Jersey to marry, and realtors refused to sell the couple a home outside Philadelphia. They eventually found a home in Paoli, Pennsylvania, where they still live. As of 2026, Checker and Lodders have been married for 62 years and have three children and seven grandchildren. Originally released as the b-side to "Teardrops on Your Letter" by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, Checker's 1960 cover became a national sensation after Checker performed it on "Dick Clark's American Bandstand," on August 9, 1960, and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 19, 1960. 8 x 10 inches.
