, Stewart, William Rhinelander, 1852-1929, ed. The philanthropic work of Josephine Shaw Lowell : containing a biographical sketch of her life, together with a selection of her public papers and private letters. New York : Macmillan Company, 1911, xv, 584pp., worn and frayed blue-green cloth, front hinge weakening, interesting ownership notes on front endpaper tracing the book from Mary Forbes Russell to Mary R. Amory to Mary A. Colt, Wing's Nect, Pocasset, Massachusetts. Josephine Shaw Lowell, 1843-1905. - Appears to be a book on philanthropy given by one Brahmin mother to her daughter Mary Amory (1870-1961) at age 40, and rediscovered at a Boston antiquarian bookshop in 1966. - The book includes a lengthy excerpt from a letter from Josephine Lowell to Mrs. Henry S. Russell, dated 1889 - this would be the "grandmother" who gave the book to her daughter.
