Pages are [8], 240, the text interspersed with many delightful wood engravings by L Clennell after Thomas Stothard R A. In contemporary full calf with red title piece and gilt tooling to spine. Minor wear including slightly bumped and rubbed corners and loss to head of spine exposing headband. Binding sound and pages very nice. Samuel Rogers was a celebrated poet in his lifetime but is best known today for his recollections of friendships with many of the great and good in literary and social life in London during his time.

Including 'The Pleasures of Memory', 'Ode to Superstition', 'Imitated from a Greek Epigram', 'To a Friend on His Marriage', and more. Rogers was a Romantic poet who, despite being very celebrated during his lifetime, has been eclipsed by his colleagues such as Byron and Coleridge since his death. He was great friends with many popular romantic poets, and kept enlightening and amusing recollections of the artistic and literary life of London in that era. Illustrated by Thomas Stothard. Stothard was an engraver and illustrator who studied at the Royal Academy, soon after becoming the librarian to the Academy. He also illustrated editions of William Cowper's poems, editions of 'The Pilgrims Progress', and editions of 'Robinson Crusoe'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Mary Walton 1801'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page, 'A. Marcella Walton'. In a full calf binding.
