Prima edizione Copia autografata
First edition. First edition. Signed by H.T. Tsiang on dedication page, interestingly inscribed "To friend Robert H. Thayer [signed in English and Chinese characters] H.T. Tsiang c/o M. Rosener Troika N.Y. City Feb. 2nd, 1932." Thayer is very likely the lawyer who assisted in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping case that transfixed the world, starting in March 1932; he was also future OSS head William "Wild Bill" Donovan's protege according to Lloyd Gardner's book on the Lindbergh case, The Case that Never Dies. If the "M. Rosener" mentioned in the inscription was Morris "Mickey" Rosner, an intelligence-connected gangster who also pops up in the Lindbergh kidnapping case, this is a very intriguing association copy. Rosner would take Thayer around to various underworld haunts, according to Gardner. Tsiang's mention of a "troika" (a tripartite group) of himself and these two figures is also interesting. 158 pp. Bound in publisher's wraps with yapped edges. Good only with chipping along edges, creasing to spine, hinges of wraps fragile. The self-published debut novel of Chinese-American experimental author, left-wing political activist, and Hollywood actor H.T. Tsiang. A noteworthy work of Asian American fiction.

Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The Hanging on Union Square: An American Epic by H.T. Tsiang ***This is a RARE True First edition, first printing copy of important Asian-American author and actor H.T. Tsiang's fictional self-published novel "The Hanging on Union Square." It is a major work of 20th century Asian-American fiction. This rediscovered classic was first republished in 2013 by Kaya Press and again in 2019 by Penguin Classics in its series to highlight seminal Asian-American historical literature.*** It is exceedingly rare - there is only one other first printing copy I see up for sale anywhere. Bound in original stiff softcover wraps with red and black text, which is now protected in an archival mylar wrap. The interior is impressively clean with no writing, previous owner marks or stamps, only very light toning to perimeter of textbook, last 30 pages of the book's 223 pages have bent top corners, covers have a few stains, there is edge wear, small crack on front hinge and the back cover has separated from the spine while the cover remains whole and attached. See pictures. A self-published, experimental, Cultural Front-era proletarian novel by a Chinese American author and actor who lived in Greenwich Village. The story is about a man called "Mr. Nut" who sits in a cafeteria, and listens to the problems of the people around him. Mr. Nut himself is unemployed, however feels as though his condition is temporary and dreams of striking it rich. Throughout the story, the reader sees Mr. Nut transforming into a radical activist. The book shows multiple facets of the social strata within the streets of Greenwich Village. Thist first edition was self-published in 1935, after being rejected from numerous publishers. Tsiang places numerous rejection letters in the opening pages of the novel. True to Tsiang's radical aesthetic, the original copy does not show the title of the book, instead questioning what a book cover really is: the cover of a book / is more of a book / than the book is a book." Upton Sinclair ("The Jungle") had this to say: "This is a voice to which the White world.will have to listen more and more as time passes. I do not mean this particular young Chinese Poet, but to the movement which he voices." Hsi Tseng Tsiang (Chinese: 蔣希曾; pinyin: Jiǎng Xīzēng; Wade Giles: Chiang Hsi-tseng; 1899 1971) was a Chinese-American left-wing writer of novels, poetry, and plays. In his later years, he trained himself to be an actor in Hollywood. He was captivated with the proletarian movements and created literature works associated with the miserable life of the early Chinese Americans and the struggle of working-class in the United States. In his works, he created eccentric but radical figures, bold but self-deprecating images as instruments to serve his vision of a proletarian revolution. Tsiang was recognized as an innovator who managed to melt the essences of literature in the eastern and western world.[1] He was also the first left-wing writer who utilized his works to promote social changes and his political awareness from the perspective of a Chinese American.[2] His famous novels were China Red, And China Has Hands and The Hanging on Union Square. He was also one of the first noted Chinese film actors, having moved to Hollywood in the early 1940s.[3] Two of the more famous films he acted in are Tokyo Rose and Oceans Eleven (1960). As a fellow book collector, I know how frustrating it can be when items aren t accurately described or poorly packaged for shipping.
