Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. Screwball by Tug McGraw and Joseph Durso was published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, in 1974. Not an ex-library copy, this 5 1/2" X 8 1/4", 178-page, 39-year-old, Signed First Edition offering is in VG+/G+ condition. The book is like new, but for some ever-so-slight, barely noticeable yellowing of text's pages--it is firm and crisp, physically. The dust jacket would be rated as high as VG+ were it not for two, side-by-side, 3/8"-wide X 1/2"-long, bare white areas (no doubt the results of a previous owner removing a small price label/sticker) near the top-right corner of the front cover section. There is modest shelf wear seen at top and bottom edges of jacket's spine as well as in random spots along top edges of front and back jacket cover sections. The book is SIGNED, by both Tug McGraw and Joseph Durso, on the middle-third portion of the half title page. From front/back inside jacket flaps, ".Last season the Mets went from a floundering last place in August to the World Series in October. They came within a game of winning it all, and one of the players most responsible for their surge to the top was Tug McGraw, with his clutch pitching and his now-famous slogan, 'Ya Gotta Believe!' " This, then, is a detailed retelling of the New York Mets' glorious 1973 season, and of Tug McGraw's repeated exploits during that season to help catapult the Mets into the Fall Classic, in which they were narrowly defeated, four games to three, by the Oakland A's. Willie Mays, Gil Hodges, Sandy Koufax, Bud Harrelson, Tom Seaver, Burt Campaneris, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson, and Pete Rose are just a few of the great baseball names invoked within this very personal look at a true "character", sometimes hilarious, sometimes unpredictable, but almost always outstanding coming out of the bullpen to stop their opponents in their tracks. Also includes some 23 black and white photographs to further highlight many of the stars talked about within this volume's covers. Obviously, this is one for any serious Mets fan to consider adding to his or her possessions, if for no other reason than its a great read of one of my favorite kinds of book: a detailed, often behind-the-scenes look at one of the most popular professional sports, and at a time when baseball was a, hopefully, cleaner, purer, more honest game. Thank you!! Signed by Author(s).
