T.p. further states that it is edited 'from the Third Impression (1671) and Collated from the Fourth Edition (1704)'. Both the 1927 and 1928 Holden editions are undated but the 1927 one has an additional name, Antonio Coello, among contributors, the 1930 edition is dated. 8vo. 6.5 x 9 inches. xxxii + [8] + 155 + [1] pp. Facsimile title pages of 1663 and 1671 editions Bound in original quarter light brown cloth over dark brown boards, titles in black and gilt, in dust wrapper, which is sunned at spine and edges with a few chips at head of spine. Deckled edges, a few pages uncut. A few traces of foxing on preliminaries, but otherwise a very good clean copy. Decorated by headpiece vignettes, by publisher's device on title page and by colophon at end. This play by Sir Samuel Tuke (c.1615-74), royalist officer and playwright was thought to be adapted from a play by Calderon, but is now considered to be the work of Antonio Coello (1611-52). Samuel Pepys attended the premiere in 1663 and gave it high praise. This edition was edited by Herbert (or Bertie) Van Thal (1904-83), publisher, biographer and editor of anthologies, with an introduction by Montague Summers (1880-1948), scholar of seventeenth century drama, Gothic fiction and the occult.
