Decorated by initials and endpiece vignettes St John Colbran (1842-1922) took over the publishing business of his father, John, in 1860 but did not produce the first edition of his own guide until 1880. The title has an extensive historical section occupying the first 151 pages of the text. The Colbran company, which had been publishing guidebooks since 1839, was purchased by Goulden and Nye in 1887, although this Second Edition still remained in print in 1893. In original buff printed stiff card boards, with variant title and edition statement on front and summary of contents on rear boards. Deckled edges. Recent paper spine, extremities worn and occasional foxing; otherwise a good copy. Illustrated by hand coloured folding map frontispiece, engraved Circulating Library advertisement (at end) and 7 Bewick-style vignettes in text, including title page. Decorated by endpiece vignette. Similar to Goulden 35-36 but the preface (Address) is dated 1820, the Advertisement, May 1821 and there is a list of lodging houses at the end. As Goulden observes, this Second Edition, originally published in 1818, appeared in 'a rash of reissues marked variously by cancel title pages, differently dated prefaces or cancel covers.' The second edition was a notably reduced version of the previous 1817 edition that John Clifford (1787-1843) had taken over from his uncle, Jasper Sprange. An 1837 reissue of the Seventh Edition, corresponding to Goulden's (c) state with the Vapour Baths addition at the end. It is closest to Goulden 59, but has five plates rather than six and a different pagination of the advertisement sections after the main text. The preface (Address) is dated June, 1837. Like the preceding Fifth and Sixth Editions, John Clifford (1787-1843) has returned to using the identical title page of his 1817 edition with the 1837 date re-engraved. The Bewick-style wood engravings have been dropped from this state but reappear in the 1840 issue of this edition. Aggiungi al carrello12mo. 4.75 x 7.75 inches. [2] pp. advertisement tipped in + 28 pp. advertisements + x + [ii] + 353 pp. + [1] +[1] pp. publisher's advertisement + 5 pp. Addenda + [2] pp. publisher's advertisement. South Eastern Railway section has separate title page but pagination and register are continuous. Bound in original brown cloth, gilt with oval gilt title on front board. Extremities a little worn and occasional foxing but otherwise a very good copy. Armourial bookplate of William John Mercer. Illustrated by frontispiece and by wood engravings in text. This Second Edition of Colbran's New Guide For Tunbridge Wells has the date 1844 on the title page and an undated Advertisement and Preface, but refers to 'this present summer, 1846' on page one of Addenda. Essentially a reissue of the 1843 Second Edition, it has no map, only one plate (instead of fourteen) and a five page Addenda and therefore corresponds most closely to Goulden 80; with the exception that it has a brown cover and the advertisement for the Hydropathic Establishment on page 27 of the initial advertisement section is pasted over by a cancel advertisement for the same establishment as in Goulden 82 and 83 (which, however have the map and fourteen or fifteen plates). According to Goulden, too many copies were normally printed of these guides, leading to a complex sequence of cancels and reissues of the preliminaries of all editions from 1839-40 onward (see his paragraph, p. 94-95 for the additional complications of the 1844-46 reissues). A notable addition to the Second Edition is the addendum on the South Eastern Railway, whose main line to Folkestone and Dover was completed, 1843-44, while this 1846 reissue has an Addenda describing the opening of the Tunbridge Wells branch railway. John Colbran (1809-84) was a former apprentice of John Clifford, the other important publisher of Tunbridge Wells guidebooks in the first half of the nineteenth century. Colbran employed James Phippen (1795?-1862), who had written guides for several other Kent towns, to edit his guidebook. The former owner of this copy was William John Mercer (d.1926), a Margate solicitor whose collection of books and papers is now in Canterbury Cathedral Library. Illustrated by hand coloured folding map frontispiece, 4 plates and by 9 wood engravings in text. An 1856 reissue of the 1855 Eleventh Edition, this is one of the abridged editions produced by Isaac Barber Clifford after his father's death in 1843. It corresponds fairly closely to Goulden 103, except possibly for the number of advertisement pages at the end. The wrapper is dated 1856 at the head of the title. Includes distances, fares and useful information at the end and now information on the London and Dover (i.e. South Eastern) Railway. The Eleventh Edition was the last guide to Tunbridge Wells to bear the Clifford imprint; the advertisements inside the wrappers being for Joseph Simpson, (Successor to I. B. Clifford.), to whom Clifford had sold the business before leaving Tunbridge Wells. KENT TUNBRIDGE WELLS KENT TOWNS- GUIDES 19TH CENTURY ILLUSTRATED KENT Goulden, p. 96 and 103 75, p.113.

A Description of Tunbridge Wells has a separate title page, pagination and register. Bound in contemporary full calf; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting green title label, gilt. Marbled endpapers. Extremities a little worn and occasional light foxing but otherwise a very good copy. 1803 inscription on 2nd free endpaper and 1809 date added underneath. Illustrated by 3 engraved plates, including frontispiece and by engraved title with vignette and dedication. First published in 1780, the early issues of this little guide, all dated 1780 have very eccentric pagination and Goulden lists five variants and there are numerous variations between printings. Sprange frequently inserted extra leaves but not in all copies. This issue conforms most closely to numbers two and three in his sequence, giving it a date after March 5th but before July 27th 1782. It does not have the four leaves of cancels after p. 54 in the second part noted by Goulden. It may possibly predate the point at which he inserted the cancel leaves. This issue is printed on larger paper than most examples that we have seen and perhaps Mr Sprange had no supply of the inserted cancel leaves in this size of paper and therefore dropped their insertion in this copy. There is no evidence whatsoever of these leaves having been present, the binding being entirely original. A very attractive Tunbridge Wells guide with a fine collection of copper engravings, paying particular attention to the major country seats, which are described in detail with lists of paintings. Small, contemporary newspaper cutting tipped in, p.206. Otherwise a fine complete copy. Author's address is signed J. Sprange. January, 1815. This copy is a reissue of the 1815 edition and is similar to Goulden 27 but has additional plates, even more than Goulden 28, which has only eleven. It has the preface complete and 'A list of the Lodging Houses', pp.313-320. The colophon, in the name of Clifford, Printer, is on p.332 only.
