Prima edizione
Prague: Odeon, 1925. Octavo (19.6 × 13.9 cm). Original decorative card boards by Karel Teige and Otakar Mrkvi?ka; 136, [4] pp. Wrappers dust-soiled and rubbed; else good. Second edition (and first edition in this design) of the acclaimed novel by Van?ura (1891-1942), an early member of the Dev?tsil avant-garde group and co-formulator of the Poetism movement. Karel Teige and Otakar Mrkvi?ka began their intensive collaboration as book designers and also stage designers in 1924. Two publishing houses had a significant influence on them: they designed the first ten volumes of the Aventinum People's Library in its clearly constructivist form. Above all, however, it was the Odeon publishing house, with its publications by Dev?tsil members and of contemporary French literature, which became a forum for Czech avant-garde print design. Teige also designed the signet for the publishing house and was co-responsible for most of the books as a graphic designer until the 1930s.In addition to the present normal edition, a special edition of 100 copies was published on Japon Banzai, of which copies 1-50 are signed by the author.Primus 240; Toman 3.3.7; Srp 126; Vloemans 56.

Copia autografata
Prague: Odeon, 1929. Octavo (19.8 × 13.7 cm). Original decorative wrappers by Karel Teige; 134, [3] pp. This copy unnumbered, but signed and inscribed by the author and Toyen to Vit?zslav Nezval. Very good or better; with very faint soil to wrappers. Third edition (but first illustrated) of the acclaimed novel by Van?ura (1891-1942), an early member of the Dev?tsil avant-garde group and co-formulator of the Poetism movement. This edition was the first to feature the illustrations by Czech surrealist artist Toyen (Marie Cermínová, 1902-1980). An important, outstanding association copy, warmly inscribed by Van?ura and Toyen to Vít?zslav Nezval (1900-1958) in the year of publication, ?for his passionate praise.? Nezval was another leading light of Czech poetism and, later, surrealism, and an early member of Dev?tsil famous both for his energy as an organizer of the avant-garde and for his prolific output of highly lyrical and associative verse. Cover featured in Vloemans 2012 (no. 164).
