Trade Paperback. Condizione: As New. Wagner, Deke D. - Cover Design (illustratore). First Edition Stated. 427 Pages plus Historical Notes, and an Appendix listing Aeroplane Profiles, Specifications and Data of selected German, French, and British Aircraft of World War I. An As New book with flawless interior text pages. This is a novel about the Imperil German Air Service set in France during World War I. Willi Wissemann, an impetuous Bavarian officer, joins the German Air Service in 1916 to escape the drudgery and hardships of trench warfare. He is sent to the Front after a brief stint in flying school and begins his career as a recon-bomber pilot, excelling at the seemingly menial tasks of aerial bombardment and photographic reconnaissance. But Wissemann soon realizes that flying single-seat fighting scouts is his true destiny. When the German High Command reorganizes the Air Service into specialized hunting-squadrons and re-equips them with their latest scout, the Albatros D.the air war takes on a fiercer and more deadly course. Finally, after many months of pestering the Army High Command, Willi Wissemann gets his chance to take command of a Jasta fighter squadron. Once he arrives at the airfield in the Champagne sector, he realizes he has his work cut out for him. He must reorganize an insubordinate bunch of misfits, misanthropes, castoffs and drunks, into a real fighting-squadron. Then during the height of the French spring offensive of 1917, Wissemann is asked to fly a special mission to Paris, transporting a Secret Service agent. What happens next will have a profound effect on his life, his career, and his outlook on the war, changing him forever, scarring his soul for eternity.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. Z : 80 pp., 37 ills. 28.50 x 24.00 cm - Mount Fuji is widely considered a majestic mountain lauded, interpreted, surmounted. In the early nineteenth century, Katsushika Hokusai honored it with thirty-six woodcuts. Working according to Japanese tradition, he used symbols representing the seasons and depicted people engaged in activities alluding to the future. The genre is known as Ukiyo-e and the images describe a world in flux, in terms of both space and time. Inspired by this artistic concept, the Luxembourgian artist Raoul Ries circumnavigated Fuji with his camera, capturing realistic moments. The mighty mountain always bursts into the frame, like a leitmotif: sometimes sublime, sometimes hidden, as if playing a game with the viewer. At the end of the journey, not only have readers become familiar with Fuji s various angles of view, but they ve also been given a good look at Japanese society, its connection with nature and its everyday life. In short, what we find here is landscape photography with an idea and wit.

"The Search For Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe is a compendium of pop history, a living anthropological exhibit. That makes it funny, grab-your-sides funny. But it is also a chronicle of the human heart, trying to mend its bruises, and ease its disappointments. And that makes it sublime -- catch-your-breath sublime." -- David Richards, Washington Post. "It is a dazzling, divinely human comedy!" -- Jack Kroll, Newsweek. "Miss Wagner's lines rarely miss a trick. She sums up a generation of social history into a tightly compressed saga. The audience is drawn completely into the goosebump experience, and who can stop tingling long enough to resist?" -- Frank Rich, New York Times. "It is a work of genius and compassion." -- Gloria Steinem. It's a decidedly upbeat and affirming social history, a kind of Gulliver's Travelogue of the latter half of the 20th century. All the disparate characters are tied together like some masterfully wrought bracelet, stones that make less of an impression apart suddenly dazzle when they reflect one another. Serving as narrator is Trudy, a mad bag lady who has befriended aliens from outer space here to take a look at "a planet in puberty." She alone is alert to the wonders of the universe (because she practices "awe-robics"). "Language," she says, "developed out of our deep inner need to complain . What's reality, anyway? Nothin' but a collective hunch." Trudy threads her way through the play, giving it an oddly appealing spirituality. There's Agnus Angst, the 15-year-old precocious punk performance artist who girds herself in zippers and chains and tells a radio psychologist that she's been kicked out of her house by her bio-engineer father and wants to know if it's legal. She confesses that when she looks at her family, she feels "like a detached retina." There are her grandparents, Lud and Marie, who both look "like Don Knotts, only plumper." They sadly lament that Agnus has "the manners of a terrorist," yet remember her best as a little girl with a chocolate milk moustache, and don't know where things went wrong. There's Kate, the jaded socialite stuck under a hairdryer that's drying her heart's blood as well, whose equally jaded husband doesn't even notice she's lost the tip of a finger to their Cuisinart. There's Paul, a used-to-be swinger and sometime sperm donor, who peaked during the disco days a decade ago. Now a health nut by day and coke head by night, he finds his libido in limbo and his life on hold. And there's Lily Tomlin the actress, who worries "no matter how cynical we become, it's never enough to keep up." The climax is a dazzling job of writing by Wagner, a barbed but compassionate evocation of the changes wrought by feminism, a hilarious saga of dreams collapsing, sexual arrangements backfiring, good intentions souring and bandwagons careening off the track. There's Edie, a '70s radical feminist who thought she was going to change the system, but now has the post-feminist realization that the system's changed her. And Marge, a casualty of casual sex. And Lyn, who marries Bob, the perfect feminist's mate ("He was the only man I ever met who knew where he was when Sylvia Plath died"). Reading The Wall Street Journal on acid, Bob resolves to become a "holistic capitalist whose only profit motive is that everybody profits." But utopia crumbles: "It's hard to be politically conscious and upwardly mobile at the same time," sighs Lyn." -- from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. "The intellectual fireworks are illuminating. It is genuinely a comedy about the way we are." -- Clive Barnes.

"Ralph Lauren is this country's most recognized fashion designer. Every year his name or logo appears on at least ten million products, or about one for every seventeen adults. His clothes are sold throughout Europe and the Far East, and his store in the Rhinelander Mansion on Madison Avenue is a New York tourist attraction. With this kind of distribution comes riches and fame, and Ralph Lauren knows both. One of the country's wealthiest businessmen, he has amassed a personal fortune of $400 million, and this wealth, together with his clothes and his success, have made him a pop-culture phenomenon of the 1980s: the entrepreneur as celebrity. Life has not always been so glamorous for Lauren, though. The youngest child of Russian immigrants living in the Bronx, he made his own way to the top in a version of the great American dream that is full of contradictions. He is a designer who cannot sketch and a businessman who is uncomfortable with numbers. He sells crocodile loafers for more than $500 and hand-tailored suits for more than $1,000 - yet he often dresses for work in blue jeans and a denim shirt. While most of his competitors are regulars on the New York social circuit, he prefers to spend his time with his wife of more than twenty years and his three children. With a keen eye and the lean incisive prose of a skilled journalist, Jeffrey Trachtenberg gives us a fast-paced look at how Ralph left the Mosholu Parkway and made his fantasies come true. All the high notes are here: the early days as a glove and tie salesman, the launch of Polo Fashions in 1967, the introduction of wide ties, and the start of his relationship with Bloomingdale's. There is also his near brush with bankruptcy, his involvement with filming The Great Gatsby, his relationship with Steve Ross of Warner Communications, and his bout with a brain tumor. Based on more than 150 interviews with Ralph Lauren's business associates and former employees, as well as a dozen interviews with the designer himself and his business partner, Peter Strom, Ralph Lauren: The Man Behind the Mystique is a lively and illuminating assessment of a burgeoning international business and the driving force behind it. It explains how Ralph Lauren merchandised a concept rather than a particular look and how his taste has made its mark on allied industries, including advertising and home textiles. Finally, it is the story of how perseverance, marketing know-how, and the fear of failure pushed a kid from the Bronx farther than anybody imagined possible." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
