This is the updated & edited version by the Rev. Craven, author of the History Of Mattituck and is his version of Southold town history based on Whitaker's original. Whitaker was pastor the First Church of Southold for decades and was also Councilor to the Long Island Historical Society. With material on the founding of the town, the Rev. John Youngs, the town's heritage with Southwold in England, the connections with the original New Haven Connecticut settler's colony, wars and governmental changes, the Dutch, English settlers and governors, Indian wars, church, cultural and social history. Previous owner name of local historian & collector Helen W. Prince, noted as being gifted the book by a relation on front endpaper edge and her name-sticker on front blank endpaper page. Approx. 5 ¾" x 8 3/4" size; bound in dark blue cloth; gilt cover and spine titles. Some edge and tips wear. (with) "He Careth for You" dated Autumn, 1906 and signed in print Epher Whitaker. Small broadside on cardstock, with hanging-hole at top approx. 5 3/8" x 7" overall size (and) "Labor Song" dated Southold, N.Y. march 27, 1913 also by Epher Whitaker and approx. 3" x 5," also on thin cardstock. All in very good condition and a good resource for Southold Town history and genealogy and the inspirational Rev. Whitaker.
