Simple line border in blind on front and rear boards. All text-block edges are dyed red. manilla colored end-papers. ******************************************* CONDITION - NEAR VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that has undergone some wear (there are small damp stains at edges - see below); the original owner's handsome bookplate is on the front paste-down, and the dated signature / inscription on the free end-paper, opposite. This in India ink, reading " Jos. B. cooke /from/ Grandmother / Dec. 29 - 1883 . The following particulars are noted :: EXTERIOR -- Clean. The spine extremities are compressed and abraded, with fraying just starting; joints are rubbed. The surface of the boards, front and rear, are bright - the gilt lettering still being bright. Corner tips are softly bumped with attendant rub thereon. Text-block edges are still bright - and clean. / BINDING -- Solid the leaves open widely - it is obvious that the book has been read, but no leaves are detached or loose. / INTERIOR -- The book was exposed to some moisture long ago and displays a few small damp stains (with attendant tide lines) along the edges (hence the condition grade). These are small in area, and not so egregious, but, nonetheless are there, and have as well contributed a modest sort of ripple effect to the paper. All that being said - the binding and internal pages are quite clean and the interior even has a crisp quality. The book is more than serviceable, still being a pleasure to peruse. The engraved illustrations have not suffered, and display nicely. Other than the owner's inscription, there is no writing, no underlining or marginalia.
