First edition. First Edition. Stiff Pictorial Wrappers. viii, 44pp. Charles E. Flandrau, the hero of the citizens defense of New Ulm during the uprising, made contracts with many Dakota Indians in his largely unsuccessful efforts to seek restoration of their annuity payments. These contracts now provide a lengthy list of individuals from various Dakota groups in Minnesota, giving much of genealogical value. A fine copy. Unknown Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: in wraps. First Edition. Softcover with all fold-out maps present, First Edition U.S. Government Printing Office 1960 Paginated from pg 239 to 305, plus 11 additional pages of B&W plates. Very Good, in wraps. Minor shelf/edge wear to covers. Some wrinkling to spine. Included is a xerox copy of a handwritten letter from him to his family explaining his acquiring the first 25 copies printed and signing one for them as well as providing another unsigned copy. This copy is the unsigned copy. (the signed copy was sold by our shop 2 years ago) Kipp's Post, aka Fort Kipp is the site of a Columbia Fur Company trading post, (only 96 square feet) which was apparently built at the mouth of the White Earth River in the fall and winter of 1826-27. Kipp's Post was built before the construction of Fort Clark in 1831, and is the predecessor of the famed Fort Union, built by the American Fur Company near the mouth of the Yellowstone River in 1828. This site was only briefly noted in contemporary literature, and details of its physical appearance and construction were not previously known. The available historical facts are presented in this study, and should provide a background for an understanding of portions of the fur-trading activities of the Upper Missouri River in the late 1820's. Site is now inundated by Lake Sakakawea (since the 1950's). Wonderful study with diagrams, plates and an engaging text. Uncommon vintage copy. LOC SSE-02.
