Has Italian and English text with colour reproductions. "The famous art director Alexey Brodovich once said that a photographer's truly creative work rarely lasts more than seven years. The case of Madame Yevonde seems to confirm this sad maxim: her successes in the field of experimental colour photography, in fact, began around 1932 with the discovery of the Vivex cameras, and came to an abrupt end with the closure of the Vivex production plant at the start of the Second World War. Although Madame Yevonde's career continued until her death in 1975, it was during this brief period in the 1930s that the artist produced her remarkable body of colour work, which ranged from advertising to documentary, from still life to portraiture.".

Near fine, in near fine dust jacket; slight shelf wear to jacket but generally very fresh, slight rubbing to folds, small 1cm area of loss to base of spine; stamp and numbering to front free endpaper. A collection of poetry from the Surrealist art patron and writer Edward James. The long title of the book continues 'with other poems published and many new ones. Also a song in French set to music by Henri Sauguet.' Pavel Tchelitchew's frontispiece includes a raised hand, a skeletal hand and a clenched fist. The clenched fist was used by James as a device for The James Press. It was incorporated by Rex Whistler in The Next Volume (1933) and appears again on the title-page of this book. With the scarce dust jacket featuring a photographic portrait of James taken by Yevonde in 1933. Inscribed by James on 'April Fools' Morning' in 1966. Louise Brown was born in Madison USA and began her dance career in New York musicals and The Zeigfeld Follies. She came to London in 1927 to star in The Girlfriend at the Gaiety Theatre. Married to the diplomat Keith Liversidge she moved to Norway in 1945 whilst in Oslo returned to full time training. Yevonde Philone Middleton was an English photographer, who pioneered the use of colour in portrait photography. She used the professional name Madame Yevonde or simply Yevonde in a career lasting over 60 years. During the interwar period she was amongst a group of photographers that brought a new vitality to British photography. (61/5).
