Formed by legislative action in 1842 from Burke and Rutherford Counties, McDowell's northern and western borders trace the towering heights and rugged terrain of the Blue Ridge, while its eastern and southern borders incorporate broad river bottoms and lower hills of the Piedmont. Showcasing more than 220 images, this volume is a mosaic of McDowell County's first century and covers the towns of Marion and Old Fort, as well as smaller communities like Brackettown, Crooked Creek, Dyartsville, Glenwood, Greenlee, Little Switzerland, Montford's Cove, Nebo, and North Cove. Views of waterfalls on the Catawba River and Tom's Creek, along with those of the eerie limestone formations of Linville Caverns, attest to nature's bounty. Aging photographs, many of which are published for the first time, draw attention to families, churches, schools, memorable personalities, and historic sites. This collection also brings to life the county's defining events: the arduous construction of two railways through the mountains, the destruction of Marion by fire in 1894, the disastrous flood of 1916, the textile strike of 1929, and the patriotic response by the citizenry to national crises. Photographs of selected homes, commercial sites, churches, and schools testify to the diverse architectural style and levels of economic and social well-being found in the county. 130 pp. Englisch.

It is a veritable overlay of sleek modern office buildings and elegant high-rise structures of the early twentieth century. In the center of this contemporary skyline is evidence of the financial district's long history. Boston's first skyscraper, the Boston Custom House tower, stands high from where it was built in 1915 on top of the original 1849 custom house building.Boston's Financial District chronicles the steady change from a romantic neighborhood to numerous banking and business houses. It was originally known as Old South End and was a residential site of elegant mansions designed by Charles Bulfinch and located on tree-lined squares and streets that emulated the aristocratic boroughs of London. The photographs in Boston's Financial District show evidence of the destruction wreaked by the Great Boston Fire of 1872 and the rebuilding of Boston's center of commerce. With its well-known banks and businesses, the financial district has witnessed some of the most monumental and influential historical changes in the city of Boston. 130 pp. Englisch.

The book goes back to the era just prior to the American Revolution, when lone Jewish families settled among the Connecticut Yankees to engage in trade, manufacturing, and commerce. The earliest settlers-such as Nehemiah Marks, who was living and doing business in Stamford as early as 1720-opened stores and other commercial enterprises. By the mid-1800s, city dwellers began coming to the region for summer vacations. After 1880, settlers arrived via the peddlers' routes and, after accumulating a little capital, stayed to open shops and establish themselves socially and politically. The greatest influx came in the 1890s and early 1900s, when many Jews arrived from the Pale of Settlements, eastern and central Europe, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Romania, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. 130 pp. Englisch.

Camp Rucker's role in that mighty endeavor is told in these pages through vintage photographs from Fort Rucker's Army Aviation Museum. Select passages from the War Department's 1944 pamphlet Army Life complement these images to give a unique glimpse at the life of a U.S. Army training camp during World War II and the men and women who trained there. Today, Camp Rucker is known as Fort Rucker and is home to the United States Army Aviation Center. In 1941, however, it was simply a vast acreage of pine trees, scrub oak, and sub-marginal farmland. But following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the War Department decided to carve out a training camp in this southeastern corner of Alabama. By the spring of 1942, the first freshly mobilized units had entered its gates. In the following three years, Camp Rucker trained thousands of Army soldiers, WACs, and nurses. Many of these young Americans were destined for the battlefields of the Pacific and Europe. 130 pp. Englisch.

Early policy makers, officers, and board members of the Michigan Humane Society included prominent Detroiters such as Henry Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Abner Larned, Frank Cody, Mrs. Henry Ledyard, Mr. and Mrs. John Dodge, and Thomas W. Palmer, who later went on to become a U.S. Senator. These dedicated individuals possessed a vision that set the course for today's Michigan Humane Society. Early Society efforts focused on improving the working conditions and treatment of the city's work horses, protecting women and children from abuse and neglect, and teaching humane values. Today's Michigan Humane Society provides for the rescue, shelter, veterinary care, and placement of domestic animals, as well as the rescue, rehabilitation, and relocation of wild and exotic animals. 130 pp. Englisch.

By 1900, immigrants and newcomers were flooding into the town now known as Issaquah to work the mines, mill lumber, and establish farms and businesses. Though the town's growth dwindled with the coal market in the 1920s, families first attracted by the area's business opportunities stayed because they loved the close-knit community. In 1940 the first bridge across Lake Washington heralded a new era of growth, bringing Issaquah within an hour's drive of Seattle. By the time Interstate 90 came through town in the early 1970s, many trademarks of the small town were fading. This collection of photographs, many never before published, illustrates Issaquah's heyday of mining and logging, its quiet years as a rural community, and its recent transformation into a thriving city. Included are scenes of local events such as the annual Issaquah rodeo, the Squak Valley Hot Shots musical group, and the Issaquah Skyport air show. The deconstruction of architectural symbols such as the Issaquah high trestle and an old pioneer home are also documented. 130 pp. Englisch.

Historic Lyme Village was founded in 1977 as a place to preserve the history and heritage of this whole area. Now, 25 years later, the site is home to a collection of buildings that were moved here for historical preservation, providing housing to the many artifacts that have been donated to the Historical Society over the years. Bellevue and Historic Lyme Village records the photo history of these buildings and represents, as well, the history of Bellevue and the surrounding small towns that have shrunken in size as progress continues. This collection of vintage photographs also covers the Railroad, which was important to the development of the area, and the Interurban, which made travel much easier to Cleveland, Toledo, Detroit and Sandusky. 130 pp. Englisch.

The first settlers staked 200-foot claims at the mouth of the Gulch, in what had been called the Curry District. One of the oldest mining districts in Park County, the history of the area is reproduced here in almost 200 vintage photographs, and captures America's fascination with the development of the Wild West.Park County, so named due to its proximity to Yellowstone Park, was established in 1887. Placer gold was discovered in the Gulch in 1864, and with this discovery came miners and prospectors from all over the country, ultimately resulting in the development of Yellowstone City and other communities. While open hostilities with the native Crow Indians in the region would eventually dissuade continual mining in the region, many stayed to populate the area. Pictured here are the miners, residents, businesses, street scenes, and social activities that made Park County what it is today. 130 pp. Englisch.

Junction Grove changed its name to Englewood in 1868, and in 1889, it became part of the City of Chicago. With its cross streets at 63rd and Halsted, the four railroad stations, and the 63rd Street 'L' stop, Englewood has long been a transportation hub of the south west side. This easy access helped to make Englewood one of the largest outlying business districts in the country for much of the first half of the 20th century. But Englewood has changed over the years. Now a struggling urban area, it is nevertheless known for its grassroots organizations and strong sense of community, on the forefront of revival.Chicago's Englewood Neighborhood: At the Junction explores the history of the people, places, commerce, and community that have created this ever-changing neighborhood. 128 pp. Englisch.

Miller practiced assignment photography for most of their careers. Unlike freelance documentary photographers, they did not choose the times, places, or subjects. However, instead of working at careers that could have easily become tedious and uninteresting, these former newspaper and studio photographers created a vast and amazing body of work, shooting almost every imaginable aspect of community life. Martin and Miller focused their work on Greensboro and Guilford County, but phone calls and appointments took them to all areas of the state. Included in this book are images from Greensboro, as well as Candor, Cape Hatteras, Chapel Hill, Charlotte, Lexington, Manteo, Ocean Isle, Raleigh, Reidsville, and Winston-Salem. Images from the Martin's Studio Collection were first published in Martin's and Miller's Greensboro, also by Catlett, which was created as a companion to the Greensboro Historical Museum's exhibit, which will remain on display through the autumn of 2003. Dateline Greensboro: The Piedmont and Beyond includes entirely different historical images from the archive, and unlike the thematic arrangement for the earlier book, this volume takes readers on a chronological journey-a camera ride-from the 1930s through the 1960s. Three chapters offer readers the opportunity to relive three complete days in the life of the studio, with a timeline of images made from early morning to late night. 130 pp. Englisch.

Originally a crossroads of Indian trails and encampments, the first modern development at the site was the Agriculture College of the State of Michigan. Founded in 1855, it later became Michigan State University. A surrounding community soon sprang up as a result of the college's establishment and growth. First named Collegeville, this community organized, petitioned for, and received a city charter from the state in 1907. The city and the college still share a symbiotic relationship, but they have developed into two diverse and distinct communities. This pictorial history presents images of the town as it originated and grew, in less than 100 years, into one of Michigan's most interesting cities. 130 pp. Englisch.

The oldest town in Pinellas County, Tarpon is located along the Anclote River where the river flows into the Gulf of Mexico. History in this coastal community dates back to the 1800s with the arrival of the first settlers. The advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area; wealthy Northerners flocked here creating a winter haven while numerous fishing vessels plied city waters. Enterprising entrepreneurs boosted the city's economy and reputation with the harvesting of sponges. The Greek immigrants who came to the area to continue their traditional trade of sponge diving forever enriched the city's cultural makeup with their families and customs. Today, the progressive community continues to be a shining example of historic preservation and cultural variety. Images of America: Tarpon Springs celebrates the fascinating history of 'the Venice of the South' and invites readers to experience this breathtaking locale through words and vintage photographs. Rare images, including scenes of the early sponge divers, businesses, residents, festivals, and celebrations, abound in this unique volume. Natives, visitors, and history buffs alike will delight in this visual tour of a picturesque and historically interesting community. 130 pp. Englisch.

Merchants supplying the miners and military units patrolling the region were the ones who ultimately prospered, however. When the railroad arrived a decade later, cattlemen replaced the prospectors, and Rapid City remained a hub of activity. By the end of World War I, the popularity of the automobile and newly constructed roads helped to shape area tourism. Mount Rushmore, 23 miles distant, was under construction in 1927, and the new Alex Johnson Hotel was completed in 1928. Together, they were natural draws to complement the pine-scented beauty surrounding Rapid City, making it the center of Western hospitality. On June 9, 1972, a flood roared through the heart of the community, taking 238 lives. By the end of the decade, many new civic improvements began to change the face of Rapid City again. With this growth, Rapid City retains its early charm as the 'gate city' of the Black Hills. 130 pp. Englisch.

Settlers populated the city and ambitiously founded a tiny lumbering village, which soon developed into a regional hub of the lumbering industry. Nearly a century after it was settled, Midland County experienced an oil boom, and consequently became the state's leader in oil production, bringing prosperity and further industrialization to the area.In their previous book, Midland: The Way We Were, Virginia Florey and Leona Seamster documented the significant people and places that have shaped Midland's rich history. In their second installment, Midland: Her Continuing Story, they have included the history of neighboring towns-Averill, Sanford, Coleman, Hope, and Edenville-that played a significant role in the lumbering era. Through nearly 200 historical photographs and a collection of unprecedented personal stories, Florey and Seamster again explore this fascinating region and focus on its proud heritage as an industrial leader. 130 pp. Englisch.

P.T. Barnum, who made Bridgeport his adopted home, began an 1851 project that established an industrial center in East Bridgeport, spurring many other companies to set up in this remarkable city. Igor Sikorsky, Simon Lake, Lucien and I. DeVer Warner, Harvey Hubbell, Elias Howe, and for a short time even Buckminster Fuller all produced some of their best work in Bridgeport. World Wars I and II helped to build the munitions and defense industry in the city, and companies such as Remington Arms, the Lake Torpedo Boat Company, and Sikorsky Aircraft thrived. Bridgeport at Work shows the workers and companies, producing everything from Frisbie pies to firearms, that made Bridgeport the 'Arsenal of Democracy,' and an industrial leader at a crucial time in American history. 130 pp. Englisch.

Home to the only natural lake in San Diego County, Lakeside offered visitors throughout the century a scenic backdrop for boating, fishing, hunting, riding, and hiking. Captured here in over 200 vintage images is the history of this town located just 25 miles east of San Diego. After the San Diego Mission was established in 1769, the Padres explored the backcountry, seeking grazing lands for their livestock. Following the San Diego River upstream they came to a broad valley, which they named El Cajon, 'the box.' In 1886, 6,600 acres were sold to the El Cajon Land Company for the Lakeside town site and a large inn was built as a resort. The natural clay soils of the valley, coupled with an abundance of salt for glazing and the Ohio River as a nearby source for transportation, laid the foundation for what would become the pottery capital of the United States. Naming their new towns for those they left behind-Liverpool, Chester, Newell-English and Irish entrepreneurs established factories for making crockery. The industry boomed and, by the turn of the twentieth century, Ohio Valley pottery was being exported throughout the world. The story of pottery production is more than a list of manufacturers; the towns that grew around these factories and the lifestyles of the people who worked in them provide the social fabric of the Ohio Valley. From the early pioneer villages of the 'hand-thrown' period to the towns with bustling shops and regular trolley service, residents built homes, schools, and churches, creating thriving communities. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -For seven decades, the Boston Garden functioned as both a de facto community center and the indoor entertainment hub of New England. Known to millions as the home of the Bruins and Celtics, the Garden was also home to a variety of other events. The Boston Garden was truly a 'people's palace,' serving as a venue for events both grand and humble, monumental and mundane. It was nothing less than the city's playpen, music hall, political clubhouse, tavern, cathedral, and living room. The Boston Garden opened on November 17, 1928, to an overflow audience who witnessed local boxer Dick 'Honeyboy' Finnegan defeat reigning world featherweight champion Andre Routis in a non-title bout. Three days later, the Bruins greeted a crowd that fire department officials estimated was nearly four thousand above maximum capacity. The Boston Garden captures these moments and the unique relationship that was forged with the city right from the beginning. During the Great Depression, the Garden hosted countless community events, such as free public skating and religious services. It was Boston's main attraction with concerts, wrestling, school sports, and the ever popular Bruins. Later years saw the birth of the Boston Celtics in 1946 and their unsurpassed record of sixteen world championships. Following World War II and through the baby boomer years, performers as diverse as Liberace, Elvis, and the Rolling Stones also packed fans in. The Boston Garden was demolished in 1998 to make room for the Central Artery and private development, but it lives on in the hearts of New Englanders. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The state of New Hampshire has a strong skiing tradition to brag about, and in the 1930s, it led the United States in ski activity. The early prominence of Dartmouth College's Outing Club and winter carnival was a major forerunner in the development of the sport and readied the state to receive the alpine impetus coming from Europe in the 1930s. Germans and particularly Austrians-some fleeing Nazi persecution-brought with them the expert downhill schuss and found the White Mountains suitable terrain. Rail excursions from Boston, well-plowed roads, help from the Civilian Conservation Corps, and entrepreneurial activity helped skiing take off, and many ski centers boasting rope tows opened.New Hampshire on Skis follows this development and the rise in popularity of skiing in the state. Such innovations as the Cannon Tram, operating from 1938, marked a high point of state-supported ski promotion. After World War II ended, development of ski areas began in earnest. In the late twentieth century and today, ski areas have combined their ski sport activity with other snow sports-snowboarding in particular. New Hampshire on Skis documents the growth of the ski industry in New Hampshire from its European beginnings to what is now one of the most popular winter destinations on the East Coast. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -At the close of the nineteenth century, Vernon was a rural town of diversified farms with the small chartered city of Rockville, a booming textile-manufacturing center, at its heart. By the close of the twentieth century, the town had become a bedroom suburb within the expanded Hartford metropolitan region. During this time, the textile mills that had sustained Vernon's economy for over a century closed, farmland was subdivided for housing, and the automobile changed old patterns of working, shopping, and socializing.Vernon-Rockville in the Twentieth Century combines unique and previously unpublished images with detailed and compelling text in an informative history of Vernon and Rockville during the turbulent years of the twentieth century. Highlights include photographs of rural Vernon before suburban expansion, the devastation caused by the 1938 hurricane, Rockville before and after urban renewal, and the consolidation of the two separate rural and urban parts of the town into a more unified community with a very different economic base. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nestled in the midst of the Mid-Ohio Valley along the Ohio River, Wood County exists as one of West Virginia's most populous areas. A unique history drives forward the county's diverse communities, and today's residents enjoy a varied palette of opportunities offered by both metropolitan centers and smaller, more rural hamlets. Wood County, West Virginia honors an integral chapter of The Mountain State's storied past, offering readers the opportunity to meet a variety of the county's personalities, including the wealthy-and later infamous-Irish immigrant Harman Blennerhassett, the industrial magnates who arrived with the harvesting of oil and natural gas, and even some everyday individuals. More than 200 vintage photographs also invite readers to experience the county's defining moments, such as the growth of the Volcano oil field after the War between the States, along with the county's tragedies, such as the 1909 collapse of Parkersburg's water tanks on Quincy Hill, which swept a newly married couple to their deaths. Capable of enjoying the prosperous times and of overcoming the difficult ones, Wood Countians have proven themselves time and again since its founding in 1799. This volume is a fitting tribute to the strength and will of all who have called Wood County home. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The South's finest and one of America's best-these words have always defined the world-famous Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. The Peabody emerged from the war-torn, post-Civil War South in 1869 to become one of the finest hotels in America. Its reputation for comfort, service, and fine dining grew along with Memphis's stature as 'the river city, cotton capital, and birthplace of the blues.' The most famous and infamous citizens of the era stayed at the original Peabody in its day. There, plantations were won or lost on a roll of the dice. After more than 50 years, the original hotel was replaced by a new 12-story, 615-room hotel in 1925. It was then that the hotel's name became synonymous with elegance. It also became the social center of Memphis and the mid-South, and a haunt for the rich and famous. The celebrated ducks swimming in the marble lobby fountain, parties in the skyway, or dancing on the open plantation roof to the music of the most renowned bands and orchestras of the day have all been part of this fabulous hotel's history. Today, the fully restored Peabody retains its reputation for legendary Southern hospitality and tasteful elegance. The hotel continues to serve as an anchor for the restoration and revitalization of the downtown area of one of America's most important cities. 130 pp. Englisch.
