In the past decade both the number of workers and their publications has grown at some thing approaching an exponential rate and, more importantly, the field has gradually expanded to encompass a large number of diverse areas (mediators, receptors, cell effector mechanisms, regulatory factors, etc.). It is now apparent that leukocytes are particularly useful for studies of the locomotory behavior of all cell types and of mechanisms controlling cell movement and orientation. Chemotactic factors, once discovered as substan ces able to induce directional migration in leukocytes, are now recognized as potent stimulators of a variety of cell functions. Based on our knowledge in the field of basic research in leuko cyte chemotaxis, clinical observations in combination with ex perimental studies in vivo have provided new insights into the role of leukocyte-mediator interactions. The recognition that a specific interaction between chemotactic factor and leukocyte can lead to a multitude of cellular responses and products has opened up a broad area of study. The primary aim of this book is to give an approach which would be as intelligible and lucid as possible. Our definition, produced in Chapter I, requires for its background only a little of the theory of absolutely convergent series so that it is understandable for students of the first undergraduate course. Nevertheless, it yields the Lebesgue integral in its full generality and, moreover, extends automatically to the Bochner integral (by replacing real coefficients of series by elements of a Banach space). It seems that our approach is simple enough as to eliminate the less useful Riemann integration theory from regular mathematics courses. Intuitively, the difference between various approaches to integration may be brought out by the following story on shoemakers. A piece of leather, like in Figure 1, is given. The task consists in measuring its area. There are three shoemakers and each of them solves the task in his own way. We have experienced a continuous increase in analytical sensitivity coupled with decreases in time necessary for purification and analysis. Several generations of sequencers, liquid/solid/gas-phase, have passed by and returned in other shapes during just over two decades. Similarly, the introduction of HPLC permitted an enormous leap forward in this as in other fields of biochemistry, and we now start to see new major advances in purification/analysis through capillary electrophoresis. Furthermore, progress in the field of mass spectrometry has matched that in chemical analysis and we witness continuous development, now emphasizing ion spray and other mass spectrometric approaches. In short, protein analysis has progressed in line with other developments in modern science and constitutes an indispensable, integral part of present-day molecular biology. Even the available molecular tools, in the form of proteases with different specificities, have increased in number, although we still have far to go to reach an array of 'restriction proteases' like the sets of nucleases available to the molecular geneticist. Of course, conferences have been devoted to protein sequence analysis, in particular the MPSA (Methods in Protein Sequence Analysis) series, of which the 8th conference took place in Kiruna, Sweden, July 1-6 1990. To a large extent this was due to the applications of this theory to problems in mathematical physics, such as viscoelasticity, heat conduc tion in materials with memory, electrodynamics with memory, and to the need of tools to tackle the problems arising in these fields. Many interesting phenomena not found with differential equations but observed in specific examples of Volterra type stimulated research and improved our understanding and knowledge. Al though this process is still going on, in particular concerning nonlinear problems, the linear theory has reached a state of maturity. How ever, none of them accounts for linear problems in infinite dimensions, and there fore this part of the theory has been available only through the - meanwhile enor mous - original literature, so far. This meeting contained contributions from most leading laboratories within the field of steroid/thyroid hOITIDne receptors and gave a very exciting perspective on the dynamic development of this i:ntx>rt. ant research field. Today all known steroid hoITIDne receptors have been cloned and sequenced and novel members of this supergene family are constantly being discovered. Sane of these new receptors remain to be characterized regarding the nature of their ligand. Access to probes for steroid receptors has enabled studies on mechanisms of regulation of receptor gene expression. Deletion and II'Altational analysis of steroid receptor cDNAs followed by expression in cells together with suitable reporter genes has yielded a detailed knowledge about the functional significance of the various domains the receptors are composed of. In certain cases, steroid resistance in patients have been shown to be due to point mutations in the corresponding steroid receptor genes resulting in non-functional receptors. The availability of receptor cDNAs also makes it possible to express receptors at high levels in procaryotic and eucaryotic cells. It is e. g. possible to express the DNA-binding domain of the glucocorticoid receptor in E. coli as a fusion protein with protein A which interacts specifically with DNA. Der Verfasser hat sich längere Zeit hindurch mit den Problemen der Biologie der Thermen beschäftigt und dabei oft Gelegenheit gehabt, sowohl mit den Problemen der Balneologie in Berührung zu kommen als auch mit Balneologen und praktizierenden Ärzten in Fühlung zu treten. Dabei hat er sich überzeugen können, daß die praktischen Balneologen den biologischen Problemen, die sich auf Thermen beziehen, meistens fern stehen , obwohl die Lösung dieser Probleme - wie diese Schrift zeigen will - für die Bewertung wie für die Erklärung der noch geheimnisvollen Heilkräfte dieser Wässer von besonderer Bedeutung ist. Diese Feststellung hat den Anstoß zu dieser Schrift gegeben, in welcher unser bisheriges Wissen aus dem Gebiete der Biologie, soweit es für die Balneologen von Interesse ist, zusammengefaßt wird. Eine der artige übersicht scheint um so wünschenswerter, als auch in neuesten balneo logischen Werken, wie z. B. in dem grundlegenden Lehrbuch der Bäder- und Klimaheilkunde von VOGT und Mitarbeitern, die rein biologischen Fragen und Untersuchungen auf diesem Gebiete wenig oder kaum berücksichtigt sind! Diese Lücke soll durch die vorliegende Schrift ausgefüllt werden. Die hier besprochenen Fragen betreffen die Beziehungen der Biologie der Thermen zur Balneologie. Neuware -Die vorliegende Broschtire wendet sich an spieltheoretisch interessierte Leser, die mit den grundlegenden Begriffen der Mengenlehre und mit mathematischen SchluB weisen vertraut sind. Sie hat eine besondere Klasse strategischer Spiele mit voll standiger Information zum Gegenstand, die - spieltheoretisch nicht ganz exak- haufig als 'Spiele auf Graphen' bezeichnet werden und unter denen die sogenannten Nimmspiele die bekanntesten darstellen. Mit diesem Btichlein werden zwei Ziele verfolgt. Erstens und hauptsachlich sollen verschiedene Losungsbegriffe, und zwar vor allem Gleichgewichtssituationen, fUr diese Spiele untersucht werden. Zweitens solI der Leser anhand einer speziellen Spiel klasse mit einigen Fragestellungen der Spieltheorie vertraut gemacht werden. Ab gesehen von der Losung mehrerer konkreter Spiele werden die Ergebnisse theore tischer Art sein und sich von klassischen Aussagen zum selben Gegenstand vor wiegend darin unterscheiden, daB in den Spielen Partien unendlicher Lange auf treten dtirfen und Eigenschaften der verschiedenen Losungen - tiber die Frage nach der Existenz hinaus - im Mittelpunkt stehen. An mehreren entscheidenden Stellen wird an Uberlegungen von C. BERGE [1] angekntipft, und einige neue Aspekte werden hinzugefUgt.
