We de rive expressions for a suboptimal controller in a general setting and propose an approximate solution to the Hoo performance robustness problem. The material in the book is taken from a collection of research papers written by the author. The book is organized as follows. Chapter 1 treats nonlinear optimal control problems in which the cost functional is of the form of a quotient or a product of powers of definite integrals. The problems considered in Chap ter 1 are very general, and the results are useful for the computation of the actual performance of an Hoo suboptimal controller. Such an application is given in Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 2 gives a criterion for the evaluation of the infimal Hoc norm in the finite horizon case. Also, a differential equation is derived for the achievable performance as the final time is varied. A general suboptimal control problem is then posed, and an expression for a subopti mal Hoo state feedback controller is derived. Chapter 3 develops expressions for a suboptimal Hoo output feedback controller in a very general case via the solution of two dynamic Riccati equations. From there it goes on to present the classical Hodge-Morrey decomposition and to give several versions of the Poincaré lemma. With some reluctance Friedrichs has agreed to help in making the selection although in the initial stages only one paper [47-2] was in his opinion worthy of being included. With some coaxing on my part the selection was made mainly by Friedrichs despite his frequent modest grumble that it did not make sense to include 'that' paper as 'X' had subsequently improved either the result or the proof. Later P.D. Lax and L. Nirenberg identified appropriate papers and, perhaps not so remarkably, there was almost complete overlap. The vast majority of the papers are in partial differential equations and spectral theory where Friedrichs had the greatest impact. For these Peter Lax and Tosio Kato have written the commentaries. Friedrichs made fundamental contributions in the theory of asymptotics; two papers, including Friedrichs' Gibbs Lecture, have been reviewed by W. Wasow. The very profound contributions Friedrichs made to applied mathematics are represented by some papers in elasticity, mainly written with J.J. Stoker and now reviewed by F. John and in magneto-hydrodynamics where Friedrichs' original notes have been reproduced and his contributions to the subject reviewed by Harold Weitzner. Although the para meters or moduli of curves surface in Riemann's famous memoir on abelian functions (from 1857) and in work of Hurwitz and later were considered by the geometers of the Italian school, for a long time they attracted attention only in the special case 9 = 1, where they were studied in the framework of the theory of modular functions. The work of Grothendieck, who in the early sixties pointed the way towards the right approach, and the subsequent construction (in 1965) of the moduli space Mg by Mumford were the first foundational work, to be followed by the construction of a compactification Mg by Deligne and Mumford in 1969.
