Unread Pictorial board hardcover, from closed pharmaceutical company library. 356 pages, index, illustrated with charts, tables and diagrams. Current therapeutic strategies for stroke have been largely unsuccessful. One explanation is that research and pharmacological management have focused on very early events in brain ischemia. New research has shown that brain ischemia and trauma elicit strong inflammatory reactions driven by both external and brain cells. The recognition of inflammation as a fundamental response to brain ischemia provides novel opportunities for new anti-inflammatory therapies. An international body of researchers present the latest findings about cellular and humoral aspects of immune and inflammatory reactions in the brain. The work may have an impact on the treatment of neuroinjuries and ancillary brain diseases, and increase the understanding of the roles infections and immune reactions play in the brain milieu. Contents clean, tight and bright. Book.

Lending record shows this book has never been borrowed, tiny bump on 1 corner. 194 pages, index, illustrated with charts, tables and diagrams. Many breast tumours are dependent upon oestrogen for their growth. Hormone therapy has progressed from the irreversible destruction of endocrine glands to the use of drugs that reversibly suppress oestrogen synthesis or action. The inhibition of oestrogen synthesis is most readily achieved by inhibiting the final step in the pathway of oestrogen biosynthesis, the reaction which transforms androgens into oestrogens by creating an aromatic ring in the steroid molecule (hence the enzyme's trivial name, aromatase).Whereas the first aromatase inhibitors to be used therapeutically could be shown to produce drug-induced inhibition of the enzyme and therapeutic benefits in patients with breast cancer, they were not particularly potent and lacked specificity. Second generation drugs were developed and most recently third generation inhibitors have evolved which possess remarkable specificity and potency. Initial results from clinical trials suggest that these agents will become the cornerstones of future endocrine therapy. Contents as new, clean, tight and bright. Book.

Lending record shows this book has never been borrowed. 243 pages, index, illustrated with charts, tables and diagrams. Arachidonic acid (AA) and other polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are precursors of lipid mediators of inflammation known as eicosanoids. These mediators are critical in disease processes and in regulating normal cell function. Remodeling is important in maintaining homeostasis and in regulating cell function by dictating how PUFAs are converted to lipid mediators of inflammation. Thus, PUFA remodeling is a critical process in the biosynthesis of a multitude of mediators, and understanding this process will unravel better therapeutic targets for controlling inflammatory diseases such as asthma and Alzheimer's disease. AA metabolism is described in an integrated context linking the remodeling processes with the biosynthesis of mediators and diseases. By following the movement of the substrate (AA), the volume describes how upstream biosynthetic pathways influence the formation of lipid mediators of inflammation, showing the metabolic interrelationship between all AA-derived mediators. This insight in the role of cytokines in joint inflammation and joint destruction gives a better understanding of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Apart from the impact of well-known and novel cytokines on joint tissues, the various chapters address the issue of targeted therapy with biological response modifiers and future interventions with carefully designed inhibitors. Special attention is given to elements of synovial cell activation, cell-cell interaction, cytokine interplay as well as mechanisms of cartilage destruction and bone erosion. New information on the novel cytokines IL-15, IL-17 and IL-18 and their position in the complex cytokine interplay is provided, in addition to an outline of the role of established cytokines, such as TNF, IL-1 and IL-6. Cytokine regulation of destructive enzymes, RANKL, the endogenous inhibitor OPG and their crucial roles as central players in joint erosion are highlighted. This volume gives a complete and balanced view on pivotal cytokines and joint pathology for the biomedical and clinical researcher. Contents clean, tight and bright. Book.
