Her mere mention of a product could turn it into a household name. This may sound like Oprah Winfrey, but it s a description of Ruth Lyons, a pioneering broadcaster whose audience in 1960 equaled that of Winfrey s today. With a mix of sentimentality and caustic commentary she ad-libbed her way through commercials and interviews with Hollywood stars. She ruled a broadcast empire and a famous charity all the while maintaining that she was simply a normal housewife and mother who happened to have a radio show. National magazines labeled her The most influential housewife in America. Her fame was such that throughout the 1950s and '60s, tens of thousands showed up for her remote broadcasts and other personal appearances. 100,000 people tried to get tickets for a 1957 event in her honor. Before Oprah: Ruth Lyons, The Woman Who Created Talk TV, is th.

The multi-hued and wildly diverse fish that defied nature and tradition by swimming through the highways and byways of Baltimore during the summer of 2001 belonged to Fish Out of Water, an urban art exhibit on a grand scale. The fin-tastic project fired the imagination of local residents and tourists alike. When people discovered their first fish, the quest was on! Not wanting to miss a single ichthyaerius Baltimoris (the scientific name bestowed on the fish), groups organized walks to discoverand often to photographevery one of the 180 finned creatures that graced the Inner Harbor and other city neighborhoods.Twas whispered that the fish were magic: they had the power to make peopleeven grumpy onesbreak out in smiles; they caused total strangers to chat and joke with each other; they seemed to beget good will and to set children to skipping from fish to fish. Folks who went "fishing" discovered a "chicken of the sea," a "fish tank," a "clown" fish, a "plane ol fish" complete with propellers, a "monk" fish with robe and tonsure, an "armored fish" and a multiplicity of other surprises that are displayed in this official book of the Fish Out of Water exhibit. Incredible talent and imagination produced fish covered by feathers and formstone, pennies and spoons, flora and fauna, and assorted other unusual items in a display of artistic splendor. Gallons of paint brought intricate and inventive designs to life. This book provides a permanent record and a sou-fin-ir of Baltimores wonderful Fish Out of Water summer.Even better, readers will discover that the magic still exists. If they need a smile, if they want to feel lighthearted, if they want to re-live the sheer delight of Fish Out of Water, they need only open the pages of this book and enjoy!.

Bob Hunter's Chic is the untold story of the unassuming schoolboy who laid the groundwork for Ohio stadium, as well as the story of the building of America's greatest athletic institution, the OSU program. It's a near cinematic tale of how it all began, how mighty Michigan was first put in its place by the Buckeye upstarts. It is a story of the game itself creating its first modern identity, and into it all is woven the story of a boy whose prowess matched the vibrant passage of a city and a university reaching for their own potential. Finally, it is a love story. In all its odd and mysterious turnings, neither the city nor the university ever forgot the schoolboy. Almost half a century afterward, Chic Harley returned to Columbus and a third of the city lined the downtown streets in the rain to cheer him.Chic Harley is the ghost in the program, a tragic figure who through the life of Ohio Stadium gave as much sustained pleasure to as many people as any athlete of all time.

He became one of the most respected and well-known cardiologists in the world, most notably in building a world-class cardiology program at Stanford University. He then moved to Cincinnati to direct the University's Medical Center with more than 1,000 faculty members and over $240 million in funded research and an extensive building program. In this memoir, Dr. Harrison describes the changes in medicine and cardiology that he has experienced personally and that he has influenced over a career spanning 50 years. His drive for excellence came from his mother's early, strong hand, although she later rejected his choice of careers. Much of his life's work has been to heal broken hearts, even his own in his relation to his mother. There were and continue to be many highlights in his 50-year career: Being the cardiologist for the first heart transplant performed in the United States by his close colleague and friend, Dr. Norman Shumway, at Stanford; making medical research and training cardiologists for the future priorities at the Stanford University Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center; treating royalty in the United States and around the world; visiting China and the Soviet Union to treat patients and open diplomatic doors; and in developing new drugs and technology for treating patients with heart disease.Dr. Harrison continues to be active as a venture capitalist and a company founder. He has been the founder or co-founder of six medical technology companies and has been on the board of directors of twelve companies. He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife, Laura.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. The photographers of the Clinton County project--there were nearly twenty of them--did not work quickly; they studied the lay of the land, met people, drove the streets and alleys of every community, and knocked on several hundred doors. More than two years, countless miles, and several thousand images later, the result is A Place Called Home. One of the most ambitious photographic projects ever compiled in Ohio, it arose as idea in the minds of two local women--Joann Chamberlin and Leilani Popp--who saw it as a fund-raising vehicle for their Clinton County Foundation. Its execution fell to the localOrange Frazer Press, whose urban art and coffeetablebooks had put it within the orbit of some of the best photographers in the country. And so it began, the diverse group ranging from Thomas Witte (journeyman Sports Illustrated shooter) and Dan Patterson (one of the country's foremost military aviation photographers), to Thomas Schiff (who brought in his 360-degree panoramic camera) and Ty Greenlees (the lead photographer who brought his own airplane for aerial shots). It was the photographic equivalent of bringing the Special Forces into Clinton County to chase down insurgent photographs. Naturalist and landscape specialist Ron Levi mapped most of the county, studying its agrarian vistas through four seasons to learn where the light fell most advantageously. Bob Flischel, the noted portrait photographer, came in from Cincinnati for lengthy sessions involving a sound stage of lights (as well as the patience of his subjects). The photographers juggled whimsical weather and the vagaries of people, machinery, and livestock. They scheduled and re-scheduled.The foundation, in a farsighted moment of its own, gave the photographers--most of whom did not know the county--a virtual carte blanche to discover the essential imagery of the place we call home. Their work to locate our universal imagery has become a picture of life in one particular Midwestern place, held firmly by two centuries of agrarian small town traditions even as it moves itself into a less-traditional future. Picture by picture, these photographers demonstrate how we live and work and play, and they do this in such a compelling fashion that their narrative picture leads others to wish they lived here, as well.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Columbus celebrated its Bicentennial in 2012, but the celebration was about much more than the city s birthday. For the first time, Columbus celebrated itself its very essence, including everything and everyone that make the city unique. Simply put, we celebrated US.REVEALED COLUMBUS documents a defining year in the life of an emerging American city.More than a milestone, the Columbus Bicentennial inspired a city-wide mobilization of creative, free-thinking, innovative and diverse people, businesses and communities. The collaboration, goodwill and zeal made the bicentennial a success and represents the very qualities that make Columbus extraordinary.A group of local photographers spent the year on the streets, sidewalks and bike paths, in neighborhood parks and festivals, at concerts and shows and games even in places like the bell tower of Ohio Stadium. Their images capture a special moment in time for this special place we call Columbus. This book shares the many ways the community celebrated the city s 200th birthday, but it is impossible to capture the extensive activities and emotion of this special milestone. While many activities focused on events, many initiatives were also undertaken. The Columbus Chamber recognized over 350 businesses in operation for 25 years or more. JP Morgan Chase provided 37 Bicentennial neighborhood grants. The City created 210 gateway signs for 65 neighborhoods. Birthday parties were held at City Community Centers. The Columbus Historical Society moved to COSI. Friends of the Columbus Metropolitan Library held birthday parties in all 20 branches. The Columbus Council on World Affairs Global released the Global Report. The Columbus Sister Cities International hosted delegations from three of eight sister cities, including Dresden, Germany, Odense, Denmark and Ahmedabad, India. There are certainly many more examples, but the evidence is clear that significant momentum has been generated in 2012. This is especially true for the collaborative marketing of this smart and open community. As stated by The Columbus Partnership s Alex Fisher, If we stay committed over the next decade to telling the good news about our community consistently, we will leverage each other in a way that can be very impactful for Columbus.Let us go forth, tell the story of US, and reveal Columbus!.
