Softcover. Condizione: Good. Mongolia is an adventurous travel destination. While some luxury accommodations exist in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar (UB) and some tourist hot spots have more Westerner-friendly accommodations, the most interesting experiences are outside the capital, where travelers must be creative, patient, and resourceful. The good news, though, is that your extra work pays off - and this book will serve you well in discovering the real Mongolia. The authors of this book served as Peace Corps volunteers and, combined, lived for over ten years in Mongolia. They lived, worked, and played in local communities all across the sparsely-populated steppe and in the quickly developing urban centers. With the help of local travel experts, host families, fellow travelers, and a national network of expats and locals, they share their distinct perspectives so that you can experience the country as they did - from the inside.- Wander off the beaten path to enjoy the unique hospitality of pastoral nomads on the steppe.- Take in the rolling mountains, meandering streams, and nourishing lakes that gave rise to some of the worlds greatest civilizations.- Explore Tibetan Buddhist monasteries - many of which have been hidden from outsiders for centuries.- Watch the three manly sports, experience the four cardinal directions upside-down, and learn the five traditional herd animals of the Mongols.- Ride to where roads become pastures and pastures become desserts in the Land of the Blue Sky.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Alice Aycock (b. 1946) emerged onto the New York art scene in the 1970s and is best known for her large-scale public sculptures that often combine an industrial appearance with references to weightlessness as well as to science and cosmology. Aycock also has embraced the practice of drawing throughout her enormously productive career. Alice Aycock: Drawings is the first exploration of her spectacular drawings, which include elements of mirage, fantasy, and science, and evoke both abstract thinking and bodily sensation. The works on paper featured in this handsome volume highlight the major themes that have governed her artistic practice: the role of architecture as a founding point of reference; the importance of mechanics and structure; and references to nature. As author Jonathan Fineberg demonstrates, Aycock is an artist who thinks on paper. Her works are often equal parts engineering plan and science fiction imagining. Visualizing such contradictions allows us to, in her words, transport ourselves farther into another place.Distributed for the Parrish Art MuseumExhibition Schedule:Grey Art Gallery, New York University(04/21/13-07/13/13)Parrish Art Museum(04/21/13-07/14/13)Santa Barbara Museum of Art(01/25/14-04/19/14)University Art Museum, UC Santa Barbara(01/25/14-04/19/14).

Softcover. Condizione: Good. This catalogue was produced to accompany Damien Hirst's 2003 exhibition at White Cube gallery, London. The show dissected and recast the story of Jesus and his disciples through paintings and sculptural work while revealing the uncertainty at the heart of human experience. The exhibited works included The Apostles,a series of 13 clinical steel and glass cabinets filled with medical instruments, weapons, ornaments, blood, and life's detrius: a dozen canvases encrusted with flies suspended in resin, each given a fatal disease for a title: skinned cows'/bulls' heads in individual tanks punctured/lacerated/stabbed with knives and glass fragments; and huge canvases embedded with butterfly wings arranged in extraordinary grid systems. This book contains 46 colour illustrations, including many details of the exhibited works and four gatefolds. An introductory essay by Annushka Shani examines each work more closely, drawing out the themes of love, life and death explored by Hirst through this exhibition.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. This book is a creative guide to the making of arguably the most extraordinary art object to be made in the 21st century. Published to accompany the 2007 exhibition Damien Hirst: Beyond Belief at White Cube, London, it gives a fascinating pictorial insight into how Hirst's diamond skull piece "For the Love of God" was conceived and produced. Illustrated with candid behind-the-scenes photographs by Johnnie Shand Kydd, the book includes a number of preparatory drawings by Damien Hirst and a fold out image of the diamond skull. Accompanying this is an essay by the art historian Rudi Fuchs, who writes: "The skull is out of this world, celestial almost. I tend to see it as a glorious intense victory over death." A number of leading experts in the fields of archaeology and dentistry have also contributed detailed studies on the diamond skull, including analyses of its age and ancestry.

Softcover. Condizione: New. Requiem II details all the previously unseen skull paintings from the Requiem exhibition at the Pinchuk Art Center, Kiev, Ukraine, in April 2009. Featuring over 40 works painted between 2006 and 2008, Hirst uses paint to convey the darker, philosophical attributes of death. Emerging from the midnight darkness, his Requiem skull paintings speak of a remembrance of corporeality and the transportation from body into soul. Using the skull as representative of this transition, Hirst appeals to our universal nature, his art merging sublime romanticism with life's cold scientific reality: together we drive towards death.
