The kings of Mycenaean Greece kept their accounts on clay tablets written in a script now known as Minoan Linear B. In 1952 this was deciphered and shown to conceal an early form of the Greek language. This book tells the story of how Linear B was discovered, deciphered, and interpreted, so that we can now read the administrative documents of these small prehistoric states. Two related scripts are also discussed: Linear A, the forerunner of Linear B, but used for a language which is still unknown, and a Cypriot script which, borrowed from Linear A, is equally enigmatic. Many interpretations have been put forward for these scripts but until more tablets are discovered their mystery will remain unsolved. ~#~ THIS BOOK: A New book, with plenty of drawings and symbols to keep you interested. Nice clean book full of interesting data. #### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. Names of kings carried particular force, because the king of Egypt acted as earthly counterpart to the sun-god. At his accession to the throne Pharaoh took five fixed titles to express his divine power. One of these titles introduced the name he had held from birth, while the other four titles stood with four names newly composed for the royal coronation. With the help of ancient hieroglyphic texts and recent research, this book traces the evolution of the royal names from their genesis at the dawn of Egyptian writing c. 3000 BC, across Pharaonic history, to their use under the Roman Emperors who ruled and built Egypt. ~#~ THIS BOOK: As New book, with plenty of cartouches and symbols to keep you interested. "Over 350 outstanding artistic and cultural treasures from the period have now been gathered together for the first time in a catalogue which celebrates these extraordinary achievements and the profound transformation of Anglo-Saxon England which they reflect. Intricately illuminated manuscripts, sophisticated metalwork and sculpture, documentary materials and the developing coinage are set firmly within the changing political and intellectual currents of the time, and the close relationship between Anglo-Saxon England and the Continent is examined. This book surveys the historical and cultural background to the art of the period and provides an authoritative, fully illustrated discussion of all the works included."--Amazon. Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Madagascar. Island of the Ancestors. Tiny nip to spine. The richness of Malagasy culture is as unexpected as its unique animal and plant life. Although the island lies only 250 miles from the African mainland, the language has close connections with Indonesia, the music and weaving follow African and Asian traditions, and Arab influence is evident in areas such as astrology. There are eighteen officialy recognised ethnic groups and many dialects. In 1984-5 John Mack undertook extensive fieldwork in Madagascar and collected fine examples of the art and craft of this fascinating island. In this introduction to Malagasy life and history he explores the diverse elements from which a distinctive culture has emerged and examines in particular the significance of ancestral practice and the fundamental relation the Malagasy see between the living and the dead. Jean-Amie Rakotoarisoa of the University of Madagascar has contribtued a foreword.
