Nicholson (August 18, 1868 ? August 27, 1945), was an eminent English orientalist, scholar of both Islamic literature and Islamic mysticism, and widely regarded as one of the greatest Rumi scholars and translators in the English language.Son of paleontologist Henry Alleyne Nicholson, Nicholson was born in Keighley, Yorkshire, England and died in Chester, Cheshire, England. Educated at Aberdeen University and the University of Cambridge, Nicholson became lecturer in the Persian language (1902?26) and Sir Thomas Adams's Professor of Arabic at Cambridge (1926?1933). Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The introduction to this volume outlines the critical history of the novel from the moralising reactions of Hawthorne's contemporaries, through the as sessments of writers such as Henry James and D. H. Lawrence, to the more re cent approaches of the New Criticism, formalism, psychoanalytical criticism , structuralism and feminism. Each of the interpretative essays that follow places The Scarlet Letter in a specific historical and cultural context. T he first shows that an awareness of the convention of romance is essential to an understanding of the novel. A second investigates the tension between Hawthorne's Puritan setting and his Romantic language, suggesting a comple x relationship among author, narrator, characters, and story. A third consi ders the novel's pervasive metaphor of sexuality. The final essay locates t he work in the genre of 'the novel of adultery'.

Condizione: Good. In The Meanings of Death, John Bowker offers a major contribution to debate s about the value of death and its place in both Western and Eastern religi ons. Examining the themes of friendship and sacrifice in the world's major religions, Bowker argues that there are points of vital contact with secula r understandings of death, and that religious and secular attitudes can sup port and reinforce one another. An affirmative recovery of the value of dea th is important in our response to bereavement, and in the treatment of the terminally ill. By indicating how value can be maintained at the limit of life, without a search for illusory compensation in an afterlife beyond it, Bowker enriches our experience and understanding of the 'final question' i n a way which is always sensitive and often moving.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This book contains three independent essays, available in English for the f irst time, as well as a post-scriptum written for the English edition. The common theme of the three essays is the uses and abuses of the Holocaust as an ideological arm in the anti-Zionist campaigns. The first essay examines the French group of left-wing Holocaust deniers. The second essay deals wi th a number of Israeli academics and intellectuals, the so-called post-Zion ists, and tries to follow their use of the Holocaust in their different att empts to demonize and delegitimize Israel. The third deals with Hannah Aren dt and her relations with Zionism and the State of Israel as reflected in h er general work and in Eichmann in Jerusalem; the views that she formulates are used systematically and extensively by anti- and post-Zionists. Yakira argues that each of these is a particular expression of an outrage: anti-Z ionism and a wholesale delegitimation of Israel.
