This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume is a result of the summary and synthesis of data collected in the Grassland Biome Program, which is part of the American contribution to the International Biological Program (IBP). The purpose of this volume is to present a summary of quantitative ecological investigations of North American grass lands and to present a set of broad comparisons of their characteristics and functions as well as the results of some models and experiments that lead to practical considerations of the management of grasslands. Synthesis is a continuing activity in science. Early in the Grassland Biome Program there was a synthesis of literature data on grasslands, edited by R. L. Dix and R. G. Beidleman (1969). Results of the first year of field data collection under this program were synthesized in a volume edited by N. R. French (1971). Development of the large-scale model constructed to depict the processes and the dynamics of state variables in grassland ecosystems was presented by Innis (1978). Soon to appear will be two volumes integrating studies of American grasslands with IBP studies in other grasslands of the world (Coupland, in press) and the application of systems analysis to understanding grassland function and utilization (Breymeyer and Van Dyne, in press). The present volume presents current results and comparisons of field investigations and experimental studies that were conducted under this program. 224 pp. Englisch.

Frequently, trauma to musculoskeletal struc tures has also been responsible for the production of a seriously compromised local blood flow, thus requiring a combined therapeutic approach to the solution of the problem. Improper utilization of appliances and conventional surgical procedures for common orthopedic conditions has on occasion likewise been followed by disastrous vascular complications. The fact that these possibilities exist in clinical practice has been the prime motivation for the development of this monograph. The purpose of the volume is first to make readily available to the orthopedic or the general surgeon information that will allow him to determine whether a limb which he is treating is also suffering from an underlying impairment of arterial, venous, or lymphatic circulation. On the basis of such data, he should be in a better position to institute an appropriate and safe therapeutic program. Second, the subject matter should acquaint him with the necessary steps for early recognition of vascular complications of musculoskeletal disorders pro duced by trauma, with their differential diagnosis, and with their management. Finally, it should make him aware of the fact that a relatively large number of clinical entities possess both vascular and orthopedic components, and that it is essential to distinguish one from the other. 416 pp. Englisch.

This monograph is designed to furnish the transplantation work er with a review of the significant papers in which skin allografts and xeno grafts, applied to experimental animals and man, have played a role in acquiring a body of knowledge concerning the behavior and fate of these transplants and the reaction of the body to their presence. Skin, an essential organ for survival, a barrier between the 'milieu inte rieur' of Claude Bernard and the 'milieu exterieur,' will remain the most frequently used transplant in transplantation research. Because it is highly antigenic, the final solution of the problem of acceptance of allografts of various tissues and organs will probably depend upon the achievement of a permanent survival of skin allografts. My personal interest in transplantation, which originated during my surgi cal training, was rekindled when I met Peter Medawar (today Sir Peter) in England during World War II. These three publications are integrated and scheduled to provide in international communication the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contamination and toxicology. Until now there has been no journal or other publication series reserved exclusively for the diversified literature on 'toxic' chemicals in our foods, our feeds, our geographical surroundings, our domestic animals, our wild life, and ourselves. Around the world immense efforts and many talents have been mobilized to technical and other evaluations of natures, locales, magnitudes, fates, and toxicology of the persisting residues of these chemicals loosed upon the world. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis has been an inescapable need for an articulated set of authorita tive publications where one could expect to find the latest important world literature produced by this emerging area of science together with documentation of pertinent ancillary legislation. 212 pp. Englisch.

Most often, mother and infant are healthy and readily able to estab lish close contact-a bond. However, in some situations either mother or baby or both present complications. The more prompt and rational the treatment, the sooner the normal parent-infant relationship will commence. This book is devoted exclusively to the first days following birth. In its 15 chapters, postpartum and postnatal physiology and pathophy[ i:.;logy are reviewed by 18 specialists. Normal and abnormal development of mother and child is correlated with proven means of clinical management. Chapters 1 through 3 cover maternal postpartum developments and complications. Chapter 4 stresses the importance of a normal parent newborn relationship, a concept of increasing concern in modern society. The following ten chapters discuss neonatal physiology and pathophysi ology; the effects of obstetric anesthesia on infant behavior, pulmonary function measurements in the postnatal period and treatment of the sick newborn are discussed in detail. The final chapter reviews maternal and perinatal mortality; the data, based on extensive surveys in New York City, indicate that current management is effecting an overall decline in mortality. 292 pp. Englisch.

In both organ systems, these processes involve to a great extent the connective tissues, in particular the manner in which the extracellular materials are arranged to afford such movements. This book concerns the microenvironment of the connective tissues in the walls of arteries and the stroma of lungs. Proteoglycans, collagen, and elastic fibers and their interrelationships are discussed by eight scientists who are established researchers in this area. Their reports include important findings on how this microenvironment is altered in diseases such as atherosclerosis, emphysema, and pulmonary fibrosis. The concepts developed result from studies at the biochemical, macromolecular, ultrastructural, and light microscopic levels. Taken col lectively, the reports focus attention upon the role of the connective tissues in arterial and lung distensibility and how alterations in the connective tissues result in the loss of this function. Medical researchers and physicians interested in arterial or lung functions or diseases will find the scientific approaches and findings of the authors innovative and provocative. Students of stereologic morphometry will be particularly interested in the quantitative studies of cells and fibers in arterial walls; histologists and pathologists will find the chapter on histochemical staining interesting from both a scientific and historic viewpoint. 372 pp. Englisch.

The problems associated with disorders of the esophagus are not only related to the usual en tities which may be anticipated in any portion of the gastroin testinal tract, but include in a major fashion the functional mechanisms indigenous to the pharyngoesophageal and eso phagogastric junctions. A number of disorders, representative of the classical cate gories of disease, affect the esophagus. These include the various congenital and developmental abnormalities, of which some are complex. Trauma to the esophagus is not un common, and infective and inflammatory lesions of this struc ture are encountered relatively frequently. Consider next the collection of finite probability spaces whose associated measures assume only rational values. Let hex) be a real-valued function which measures the information in an event, depending only upon the probability x with which that event occurs. The two widest classes of arithmetic functions are the real-valued additive and the complex-valued multiplicative functions. Beginning in the thirties of this century, the work of Erdos, Kac, Kubilius, Turan and others gave a discipline to the study of the general value distribution of arithmetic func tions by the introduction of ideas, methods and results from the theory of Probability. I gave an account of the resulting extensive and still developing branch of Number Theory in volumes 239/240 of this series, under the title Probabilistic Number Theory. 484 pp. Englisch.

Albers ix INTRODUCTION In July of 1984 the first national conference on mathematics education in two-year colleges was held at Menlo College. The conference was funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Two-year colleges account for more than one-third of all undergraduate enrollments in mathematics, and more than one-half of all college freshmen are enrolled in two-year colleges. These two facts alone suggest the importance of mathematics education in two-year colleges, particularly to secondary schools, four-year colleges, and universities. For a variety of reasons, four-year colleges and universities are relatively unaware of two-year colleges. Arthur Cohen, who was a participant at the 'New Directions' conference warns: 'Four-year colleges and universities ignore two-year colleges at their own peril.' Ross Taylor, another conference participant, encouraged two-year college faculty to be ever mindful of their main source of students--secondary schools- and to work hard to strengthen their ties with them. There are many other reasons why it was important to examine two-year college mathematics from a national perspective: 1. Over the last quarter century, rio other sector of higher education has grown so rapidly as have two-year colleges. Their enrollments tripled in the 60's, doubled in the 70's, and continue to increase rapidly in the 80's. x 2. Twenty-five years ago, two-year colleges accounted for only one-seventh of all undergraduate mathematics enrollments; today the fraction is more than one-third. 516 pp. Englisch.

Nothing can seem more natural to a mathematician in this country than to honor Gail Young. Gail embodies all the qualities that a mathematician should possess. He is an active and effective research mathematician, having written over sixty pa pers in topology, n-dimensional analysis, complex variables, and 'miscellanea.' He is an outstanding expositor, as his fine book Topology, written with J. G. Hocking (Addison Wesley, 1961), amply demonstrates. He has a superlative record in public office of outstanding, unstinting service to the mathematical community and to the cause of education. But what makes Gail unique and special is that throughout all aspects of his distinguished career, he has emphasized human values in everything he has done. In touching the lives of so many of us, he has advanced the entire profession. Deservedly, he has innumerable friends in the mathematical community, the academic community, and beyond. 236 pp. Englisch.

Until recently the standard instrument was the articulated arm contact scanner. Real-time scanners were viewed as adjunct instruments for specific and limited pur poses. The roles are reversing with real-time instruments more frequently accepted as the primary diagnostic tool and the contact scanner becoming the ancillary instrument for use mainly for viewing a large field that cannot be scanned with real-time instruments. Two recent editorials stated that real-time instruments were used as the sole diagnostic instrument for between 80% [Cooperberg (2)] and 98% [Bartrum and Crow (1)] of their abdominal examinations. This book introduces the reader to the field of real-time scanning in the abdomen. It presupposes an understanding of basic physical concepts of ultrasound, the appearance of both normal and pathologic conditions as produced by static articulated arm contact scanning, and a familiarity with the techniques of contact scanning. It is designed to acquaint the reader with the spectrum of real-time instrumentation, provide a basic understanding of the physics of ultrasound as related to these instruments, emphasize the special skills required in the use of this equipment, and describe applications of real-time scanning for various parts of the abdomen. While numerous illustrations of both normal and pathologic anatomy are shown, the book is an all-inclusive study of abdominal pathology as demonstrated by real-time imaging. 256 pp. Englisch.

The rapid advances in computer technology have not provided the resources for computations which make use of methods with low accuracy. The computational speed of computers is continually increasing, while memory still remains a problem when one handles large arrays. More accurate numerical methods allow us to reduce the overall computation time by of magnitude. several orders The problem of finding the most efficient methods for the numerical solution of equations, under the assumption of fixed array size, is therefore of paramount importance. Advances in the applied sciences, such as aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, particle transport, and scattering, have increased the demands placed on numerical mathematics. New mathematical models, describing various physical phenomena in greater detail than ever before, create new demands on applied mathematics, and have acted as a major impetus to the development of computer science. For example, when investigating the stability of a fluid flowing around an object one needs to solve the low viscosity form of certain hydrodynamic equations describing the fluid flow. The usual numerical methods for doing so require the introduction of a 'computational viscosity,' which usually exceeds the physical value; the results obtained thus present a distorted picture of the phenomena under study. A similar situation arises in the study of behavior of the oceans, assuming weak turbulence. Many additional examples of this type can be given. 348 pp. Englisch.

As the demands of science and society for mathematical literacy increase, the percentage of American college students intending to major in mathematics plummets and achievement scores of entering college students continue thelt unremit ting decline. As research in core mathematics reaches unprecedented heights of power and sophistication, the growth of diverse applied special ties threatens to fragment mathematics into distinct and frequently hostile mathematical sciences. These crises in mathematics presage difficulties for science and engineer ing, and alarms are beginning to sound in the scientific and even in the political communities. Citing a trend towards 'virtual scientific and techno logical illiteracy' and a 'shrinking of our national commitment to excel lence . . . in science, mathematics and technology,' a recent study con ducted for the President by the U. 'Today people in a wide range of non scientific . . . professions must have a greater understanding of technology than at any time in our history. Yet our educational system does not now provide such understanding. What makes them work Many who have seen a geyser in action know only that it spouts hot water into the air. Many others have never seen one. Chapter 1, Geysers of the World, delineates their distinguishing features, locates the geyser regions of the world, and places investigations by world travelers and scientists in historic perspective. One of the quickest ways to become acquainted with a geyser is to observe it. The descriptions of several well known geysers, some based on past observations by others, but frequently by me, do not neces sarily portray current behavior. They do, however, represent general features. Geysers exist as a result of a delicate and unique interplay among the heat, the water, and the rocks of the earth. In essence, heat and water must be available, transported, distributed, stored, and finally released. Chapter 2, The Geologic, Thermal, and Hydrologic State of the Earth, especially that close to its surface, sets the stage for Chapter 3, Fundamentals of Geyser Operation. The geyser is treated here as a simple system consisting of three major interacting elements: a source of water, a source of heat, and a reservoir for storing water. The discus sion centers around the actions occurring within idealized columnar and pool geysers, and more complex systems. Some of the more workable geyser theories are evaluated. 240 pp. Englisch.

The primary impetus was the discovery and investigation of kuru in New Guinea by D. Carleton Gajdusek, M. D. This working discussion brought together investigators in human and veterinary medicine, virolo gists, microbiologists, and neuropathologists actively engaged in laboratory work with viruses that illustrated properties of latency, masking, slowness, or temperateness, with emphasis on subacute and chronic neurologic dis eases of unknown etiology. In the Preface to the monograph of published papers presented at the working discussion, Gajdusek and Gibbs wrote the following: After microbiology had given solution to the etiology of most acute infections of the central nervous system and after fungi and bacteria had been incriminated in impor tant chronic disorders of the nervous system such as torula and tuberculosis men ingitis, we have been left, in neurology, with a wide range of subacute and chronic affections of the central nervous systems of unknown etiology. Some of these diseases, still listed as idiopathic, are among the most prevalent afflictions of the central nervous system. Many others with familial patterns of occurrence do not yet have their basic pathogenesis or underlying metabolic defect elucidated, although we tend to think of them as genetically mediated. 444 pp. Englisch.

King The past decade has seen the ascent of ultrasonography to a preeminent position as a diagnostic imaging modality for obstetrics and gynecology. It can be stated without qualification that modern obstetrics and gynecology cannot be practiced without the use of diagnostic ultrasound, and in particular, the use of ultrasonogra phy. Ultrasonography quickly and safely provides detailed, high resolution images of the pelvic organs and gravid uterus. The quality and quantity of diagnostic information obtained by ultra sonography far exceeds anything previously available and has had a revolutionary impact on the management of patients. High resolution static images permit the intrauterine diagnosis of fetal growth retardation and fetal abnormalities. In addition to tradi tional images, newer dynamic imaging techniques allow observa tion of fetal motion, cardiac pulsation, and respiratory efforts. The use of ultrasonography for guidance has greatly augmented the safety and utility of amniocentesis. One of the great virtues of diagnostic ultrasound has been its apparent safety. At present energy levels, diagnostic ultrasound appears to be without any injurious effect. Although all the availa ble evidence suggests that it is a very safe modality and that the benefit to risk ratio is very high, the actual safety margin for its use Vll as yet remains unknown. As a consequence, practitioners are urged to limit its use only to those situations in which genuine clinical indica tions exist and real benefit to the patient is likely to result. 204 pp. Englisch.

As such, it provides the core of the Rockefeller Foundation program ofbiomedical research called The Great Neglected Diseases of Mankind. While some bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases are included in this program, the parasiticdiseases caused bypro tozoa and helminths almost uniformly fit into this category. Many ofthem infect vast numbers of people and animals (of the order of hundreds of millions), but theyare greatlyneglected bythe scientific establishmentof the modern world. The principal reason for this neglect, both scientific and financial, is the fact that these diseases are primarily problems ofthe developing world. Hence, no vaccines exist for anyofthe human parasitic diseases; for many, treatment is either nonexistent or highly toxic; and diagnosis still relies largely on the visual examination ofbiopsies, blood, and excreta. In contrast, the discovery ofa spate ofantibiotics has revolu tionized treatment of bacterial diseases, and vaccines have been devel opedfor manybacterial andviral diseases. Furthermore, the field ofmicro biology, which deals largely with bacteriology and virology, has sparked the scientific revolutions ofimmunology and molecular biology. In order to examine the present status of parasitology and the reasons for its putative neglect, as well as to develop means of remedying the sit uation, aseries ofconferences has been convened, bringing together clas sical parasitologists and a new and complementary breed of parasite-ori ented immunologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, and population ecologists. 308 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The comparative study of mediterranean type ecosystems has gained considerable momentum during the past two decades. Modem studies on these systems date from the work of Ray Specht, who studied the dynamics of the heath vegetation of south ern Australia. The results of these studies first appeared in 1957 (Specht and Rayson, 1957) and were summarized in 1973 (Specht, 1973). Specht followed this detailed work, which pointed to the central role of nutrients in limiting the productivity of the Australian heath, with a general comparison of the structural features of woody plant communities in mediterranean type ecosystems of Australia, southern France, and southern California (Specht, 1969a,b). The comparative studies emphasized remark able convergent features of these ecosystems, particularly in relation to structural features affecting primary production. Naveh (l967) also did comparative studies focusing on grassland types that occur in the mediterranean climatic zones of Califor nia and IsraeL About this same time, independent studies by Mooney and Dunn (1970 a,b) and Mooney et al. (1970) made preliminary structural and functional comparisons of the vegetations of mediterranean type ecosystems in California and Chile in an at tempt to derive an evolutionary model explaining the basis of their convergent natures. Much of the knowledge of these ecosystems up to 1973 was summarized in volume 7 of Ecological Studies, Medite'anean Type Ecosystems: Origin and Structure (di Castri and Mooney, 1973). This volume builds on its series predecessor in many ways. 480 pp. Englisch.

Children deprived of early and healthy dependency-who do not form normal attachment with their caregivers-may later suffer from Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). This childhood disorder is characterized by a general failure in social relationships resulting from pathogenic care.Although first included in the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-III) in 1980, RAD is one of the more uncommon and understudied forms of psychopathology. Reactive Attachment Disorder: A Case-Based Approach adds to a now growing research base, providing scholars and clinicians with a well-rounded analysis of RAD and suggested treatments. The case-based approach used in this Brief follows the representative case of 'Jorge,' presented as unfolding over time and structured to illustrate challenges of diagnosis, to show examples of co-morbidity, and to provoke reflection on what questions may arise during treatment. Readers are asked to appraise the overlap with other clinical syndromes, the forms of psychotherapy which may apply, and the potential role of psychiatric medications as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. 96 pp. Englisch.

Marguth, Director of the Depart ment of Neurosurgery, Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (West Germany). It contains the continuing devel opments of the extra- intracranial arterial bypass (EIAB) for cerebrovascular occlusive disease since the First International Symposium in Lorna Linda, California, in June, 1973, and the Second International Symposium in Chicago, Illinois, in June, 1974. The EIAB was developed by Donaghy and Yasargil, and it consists of a microsurgical anastomosis of the superficial tem poral artery or the occipi tal branch of the external carotid artery to the middle cerebral artery on the surface of the brain and, very recently, the anastomosis of the occipital artery to the posterior-inferior cerebellar artery for the treatment of verte brobasilar insufficiency. From the presentations at the sym posium it became evident that the greatest potential in the pre vention of a stroke in a susceptible patient is the presence of an adequate collateral cerebral blood flow. The basic diagnostic procedure is cerebral angiography in cluding both carotid and vertebral arteries. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies and computerized tomography add further diagnostic information and are particularly important in the selection of potential surgical candidates. 312 pp. Englisch.

The techniques and methodologies described can serve as a bridge between specifications that are known to the designer and RTL code that is final outcome, reducing significantly the time it takes to convert initial ideas and concepts into right-first-time silicon. Coverage focuses on real problems rather than theoretical concepts, with an emphasis on design techniques across various aspects of chip-design. 240 pp. Englisch.
