Not intended as a complete history but to point out and describe the milestones in the progress of the mental sciences, in sequence. Whereve the topic lent itself to direct quotation from an author, significant passages were reproduced, so that this work is in part an anthology. As a rule priority was given to originators, pioneers, rather than to elaborators. Historical aspects were treated generally under the head of the individuals who were direcdtly connected with the events.
