S. Lewis created another imaginary world. Its name was Boxen, and in a succession of stories Lewis explored its history, geography and the colourful exploits of its characters in quite extraordinary detail. This book presents the best of the Boxen stories, retaining the original illustrations and Lewis's idiosyncratic spelling. It also includes Encyclopedia Boxoniana, in which the adult Lewis looks back at his early creation, and an Introduction by Walter Hooper, illuminating the background to the stories. As the juvenilia of one of the most popular and influential writers of our time and a unique insight into the workings of an extraordinary mind, "Boxen" will prove of enduring fascination. More important, however, this book will allow readers young and old to enjoy an experience hitherto known only by a privileged few: that of losing oneself in the fascinating and eventful history of Boxen - a world as consistent and self-sufficient as that of "The Iliad."' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***First impression of the true first edition of "Boxen - The Imaginary World of the Young C. S. Lewis" in nice bright original condition. Of interest to collectors of the work of C. S. Lewis. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

"The Beginning of Spring" is set in Moscow in 1913, and tells the story of a Moscow-born English-educated print shop owner whose English wife has suddenly abandoned him and their three children. The novel was shortlisted for the 1988 Booker Prize. Fitzgerald had a strong interest in Russian literature, and starting in the 1960s took courses in Russian language. She visited Moscow and environs in 1975, which included a visit to Tolstoy's house and a dacha in a birch forest. In the early 1970s, as part of her research on Edward Burne-Jones, Fitzgerald became friends with a Swiss art curator, Mary Chamot, who had been brought up in pre-revolution Russia. Chamot's family had had a greenhouse business in Moscow since the mid-1800s, and they had stayed on for a few years after the revolution. The original title of the novel was to be "The Greenhouse". Later, Fitzgerald considered "Nellie and Lisa", but her editor did not approve and suggested "The Coming of Spring" instead, an idea that the author modified for the published title.' (Wik) ***Second printing of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper. Booker Prize shortlisted for 1988. A nice reading copy of the novel. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

With an introduction by Harry Willetts. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine. No foxing. Pages bright. No inscriptions. ***In a near fine beige-illustrated dustwrapper, that has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of £14.00 net. No tears. Spine of dustwrapper just slightly faded. Dustwrapper bright. ***384 pages including detailed appendixes to rear. 242 mm x 162 mm. ***'Oni is the Polish for "They" - but who are "They"? They are the shadowy leaders of the Soviet bloc, revered Party members of unrestricted power and privilege whose methods, and backgrounds, still remain largely unknown. ***In the early 1980s, when Poland was in crisis, the distinguished Polish journalist Teresa Toranska was able to interview a number of her country's former leaders, veteran communists whose careers began in the days of Stalin, and for the first time pierce this rule by anonymity. The result is a chilling, revealing and hitherto unrecorded account of how the Soviet Union secured its grip on Eastern Europe after World War II, and in particular of those it chose to run Poland's Moscow-controlled governments from 1944 to 1956. ***Those who appear here are Jakub Berman, once the most powerful and feared man in the country; Edwar Ochhab, first secretary of the party in 1956; Stefan Staszewski, Warsaw's one-time political leader who has now broken with his past; Roman Werfel, once the Party's chief ideologist; and Julia Minc, former editor-in chief of the Polish Press agency. Although now disgraced, such people were once Poland's political elite - and Stalin's puppets. The story of how they betrayed their country, told in their own words, is a remarkable and salutary reminder of how and why Eastern Europe came to be what it is today.' ***The interviews that constitute Oni were first published in Poland during the period of marital law by Przedswit, an underground publishing house.' (Quotes from inside front and inside rear of dustwrapper blurb respectively). ***First impression of the first UK edition, in its original dustwrapper, in fine bright condition. Very hard to find. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

"I began as a poet. My first publication was a poem. So I suppose on my tombstone I'd be very pleased if they put 'Poet and short story writer and occasional essayist'. In that order" [Raymond Carver] ***The keynote in Raymond Carver's last collection of poetry, which he completed shortly before he died, is a delight in the gift of the present, rather than regret for the past. And in her revealing and moving introduction his widow, the writer Tess Gallagher, recounts his last days, his growing fascination with the poetic possibilities of Chekhov's stories and the way in which this life-affirming collection gradually and naturally came together'. His creations "can already be counted among the masterpieces of American fiction"' (New York Times). His poetry is no less impressive. "In a Marine Light," the first collection of his poetry to be published outside America, is his own selection of recent work. Like his short stories, Raymond Carver's poems show a matchless talent for taking ordinary people, ordinary scenes, and making them seem extraordinary, strange, indelible. His ear for colloquial narration and dialogue is flawless. Raymond Carver's poetry is also striking in its range and variety whether he is writing "stories" about marginal lives of quiet desperation or exuberant celebrations of love, friendship and the simplicities pf everyday life. "In a Marine Light" fully affirms his high standing among contemporary writers.'
