Paperback. Condizione: new. Nikki Slade Robinson (illustratore). Paperback. The little Kiwi is fast asleep in her burrow. A beam of moonlight shines right down into her burrow. She wakes, and realises it is time. Hurrying out into the night, she wakes each of her friends from their midwinter slumber.'Kia tere! Hurry!' she urges them. The little Kiwi leads her friends through the pingao and onto the beach. It is pre-dawn. They wait, and watch. As the moon slips away behind the hills, the constellation of Matariki rises for the first time, in the northeastern sky. This gentle tale about celebrating Matariki, the Maori New Year, finishes with an explanation of Matariki it's origins, traditions and how it is celebrated today. The constellation is also shown, with the Maori names for each star. The text contains some simple words in Te Reo Maori alongside the English equivalent. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Tales from the singlehanded trans-Tasman yacht races by the author of Blue Water. The singlehanded trans-Tasman yacht race is a unique and special event. The first race was in 1970 and it is still the only singlehanded ocean race in the Southern Hemisphere and the second oldest singlehanded ocean race in the world. The next race is in April 2014. Sailing from New Plymouth to Mooloolaba near Brisbane it has spawned a rich harvest of great stories from the athletes, eccentrics, daredevils, sportspeople and visionaries who have competed, including the first woman to compete in a singlehanded ocean race and, somewhat confusingly, a one-legged, singlehanded sailor. The races have been both exhilarating and terrifying. There have been a number of dramatic rescues, a stranding on Middleton Reef and several boats have been lost. Every race is covered and most chapters include race participants' own accounts of their race. Readers are given an insight into what makes people want to sail alone across one of the roughest pieces of water in the world and how individual skippers tackle loneliness and the practical aspects of sailing, cooking, keeping dry and sleeping. Soft cover. Condizione: Good. Some light shelf wear and a faint stain to the base of the text block. Family history from the mother of Sir Peter Gluckman. In 2004, workmen demolishing the home that had housed three generation's of Ann Gluckman's family saved an old cardboard box hidden under the eaves. The letters inside proved invaluable to Ann's painstaking 20-year work piecing together the family history, which had, like the letter, been largely concealed. In 1904, Ann's grandparents, Adolph and Yetta Manoy, and their three daughters left Tukums in Latvia, then part of Imperial Russia, to settle in Stratford, New Zealand. Their story was further revealed by the discovery of a set of beautiful postcards originally mailed to the Manoys from their homeland. These postcards sent Ann's detective story on a wider and deeper search for meaning. Why did her family conceal their past with a a lifetime of silence? Was there a mystery, something to hide, or were they shielding their descendants from past traumas?.

Soft cover. Condizione: Good. A good tidy copy with minor shelf wear. For over a century, the sport of yachting on Waitemata Harbour has been the pride of Auckland. For the first time, a broad selection of Winkelmann's classic marine images has been put together in a single volume. They range from the mid 1880s when the sport was in its infancy, through the heyday of Auckland's mullet boat yachting in the years just before the First World War, and end with images taken just before his retirement in the mid 1920s. Winkelmann's Waitemata provides a fascinating insight into the origins and history of early New Zealand yachting.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Not many family businesses survive for over one hundred and forty years with four generations of family ownership, but Lewis Eady has. The Lewis Eady story is the survival saga of a business involved in a very product-specific retail sector the musical instrument retail industry. During its lifetime it has endured two world wars, the Depression of the early 1930s, a perpetual cycle of economic fluctuations and crises, changing government policies, variable interest rates and inflation, as well as a multitude of dynamic social and cultural influences, and advances in technology. Lewis Eady's also had to contend with fierce competition in the music instrument marketplace, but in particular, competition from four other rivalrous Eady family-owned music businesses. The name Lewis Eady is synonymous with the history of music and entertainment in New Zealand. The story begins with the factors that influenced the family to emigrate to New Zealand, describes how Lewis Eady became involved in the early music retail and entertainment scene in Auckland, and the ways in which the company developed its ability to adapt in order to survive to the present time.
