Soft cover. Condizione: New. Soft Cover, Stitched Binding. Reprint of 1967 London Edition. 208 x 138 mm, 196 Pages. This is the first and only selection from the essays of one of Greece's major poets to be published in English. The selection was made by Seferis himself, a few years before his death in 1971, drawing upon his prose work written over a period of thirty years. The subjects range from Sikelianos, Theophilos, the naive painter from the island of Mytilene, and General Makriyannis, hero of the Greek War of Independence, to a discussion of the nature and art of poetry and an illuminating comparison of the poetry of Eliot and Cavafy. 'As a critic, Seferis belongs to that rare class who are engaged in investigating the art of poetry at the same time as they are creating it. [He] sets down unpretentiously but with intense conviction his reflections on the subjects which are of most concern to him as a poet and as a man.[and] moves freely across the frontiers of history, education, philosophy and the arts.' --'The Times Literary Supplement'.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. Stitched binding with paper cover. Reprint of 1940 Cambridge edition, 205 x 132 mm, 225 pages. Dionoysius Solomos may be called the father of modern Greek poetry in that it was he who in the opening decades of the 19th century rebaptized Greek poetry in the ancestral springs of inspiration and language and gave it an orientation that has been followed by such major poets as Palamas, Sikelianos and Seferis. He endeavoured to forge an ideal for Greek poetry and for the Greek people that should be an expression of the highest purposes his spirit could conceive, and his later poetry bears witness to the austerity and grandeur of his task. A British subject for the last 43 years of his life, he died in Corfu in 1857. Written in a style that is acute, clear, concise and set off with a well-tempered wit, Romilly Jenkins' study of Solomos's life and work was the first book in English to present a portrait of the poet and introduce his powerful visionary poetry to the English reader.

This book is an attempt to clarify what is demanded if we are to have any chance of reinstating the sense of the sacred at the heart of all our activities and thus avoiding the cosmic catastrophe for which we are heading. The late Metropolitan Kalistos Ware described its author Philip Sherrard as 'truly a prophet of our present age'. First published in 1990, this new edition has been retypeset with amendments.

Libro Prima edizione
Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Soft Cover, Stitched Binding First Edition. 208 x 136 mm, 180 Pages. Rhigas of Velestino (1757-1798), popularly known as Rhigas Pheraios, is one of the greatest national heroes of modern Greece for it was he who some thirty years before the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821 first conceived the possibility of a full-scale national revolution to free Greece from the domination of its Ottoman overlords. His aim was not simply an armed rebellion but a regeneration of his people, through education, literature and social and political awareness. To this end he wrote patriotic stories, poems, scientific lectures, he published maps and translations, and drafted a constitution, and he was the first Greek to insist that the popular language, or demotic Greek, should become the country's official language. But he was not to witness the realisation of his vision. On his way up to stir up the Greeks of the Mani he was betrayed, arrested in Trieste by the Austrian police, extradited to the Turkish authorities and executed, with seven colleagues, at Belgrade. This book is the first comprehensive study of Rhigas's life and ideas in English, and includes 14 black and white illustrations.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. Soft Cover, Stitched Binding. Reprint of 1992 Golgonooza Press Edition. 233 x 144 mm, 188 Pages. It is now only too evident that the revolutionary changes in mental outlook that took place in western Christendom some three or four centuries ago, and that produced the modern scientific movement, are the major cause of the crisis in which the world finds itself today. Yet the terrifying consequences of the practical exploitation of modern science are usually attributed not to modern science as such but simply to its misapplication and abuse. We are even told, with a naivety that is as inconsequential as it is typical, that modern science must be good because what is true cannot be evil and since modern science produces results, it must be true. This book attacks such misconceptions head-on, and at the deepest level. By setting the modern scientific picture of the universe and man's place in it against the background of pre-Christian and Christian cosmology and anthropology, Philip Sherrard (1922-1995) shows unambiguously how our acceptance of this picture has literally enslaved us to a vast collective lie whose ramification in the major spheres of our thought and action cannot but vandalize and desecrate both ourselves and the world we live in.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. Soft cover, stitched binding, reprint of 1964 London edition, 225 x 150 mm, 292 pages. Slight foxing to edges. Travellers, poets, artists, even scholars, still go to Greece in search of something they feel that no land quite offers them. Partly no doubt this is a by-product of the enormous prestige the world of ancient Greece acquired subsequent to the Renaissance; partly, too, it is due to the sheer physical beauty with which Greece presents one at practically every step. For Philip Sherrard the enigma of Greece was virtually a lifelong preoccupation. In this anthology he explores its various aspects through the writings of those who over the centuries have found in Greece not simply an object of study or a romantic haven but a challenge, an incitement and a reciprocity that have stirred the wellsprings of both heart and imagination. '.the whole Greece is what Mr Sherrard is after in this splendid anthology. The book is not for complete beginners, nor for travellers who, without experience of their own, might be lulled into expecting everything to be marble and wild thyme. I should advise reading [it] not before but after a first visit, or during a second, when the noble and lively writing will, as it were, bring out the scent of the country.' --Dilys Powell, 'The Sunday Times'.

Hardcover. Condizione: New. 324 pages, 22.5 x 15.0 cm, sewn pages, 8 black & white illustrations,1986. This absorbing book presents the picture of Greece from the fall of Constantinople to the arrival of Byron as seen through the eyes of English poets, essayists and travellers. It shows that Philhellenism' has a much longer history than most people realize, and goes back at least to the late Middle Ages. In a manner that combines scholarship and wit, narrative history and literary anecdote, fable and fantasy, the author shows how our conception of Greece has been moulded by the feelings and opinions expressed by generations of writers when the country was under Turkish occupation and when its people, its temples and traditions were regarded as witnesses both to its ancient splendour and its contemporary sadness. Shakespeare, Milton, Shelley, Byron, as well as countless other half-forgotten travellers and poets, all contribute to the growth of that powerful current of Philhellenism which has become part and parcel of our western culture. I suppose an affection for Greece seems to most of us now something we are born with; it is the one country which would appear to possess an unalterable natural affinity for us, wrote Cyril Connolly in a review of this book when it was originally published. Fair Greece, Sad Relic is an account of why this affection and affinity have become a thread of gold in the homespun of our history. Reprint of the 1954 Weidenfeld and Nicolson edition. The pages of this present edition are uncut.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Cloth, Stitched. First Edition. 208 x 136 mm, 234 Pages. Zissimos Lorenzatos (1915-2004) was considered to be the most important man of letters of his time in Greece. An essayist, poet and thinker, he was the last of his generation with a vision that was both deeply religious and humane. His profound knowledge of European literature and thought, and his familiarity with the writings and philosophy of the East, along with his thorough assimilation of the long Greek tradition, enabled him to explore, with unusual insight, the spirit both of Europe and of modern Greece. This second selection of his essays to be published in English includes his studies on the Greek writers Papadiamantis, Sikelianos and Capetanakis, and on the architect Dimitris Pikionis, and concludes with a penetrating discussion of the American poet Ezra Pound, who called himself the 'apostle of Europe', and who visited Greece and met Lorenzatos in 1965. 'The "full-ripened" grain of Lorenzatos's essays attests to the fertility of his tradition. No one who aspires to understand modern Greek culture should ignore them.' --David Ricks, University of London.
