In der Forschung existieren zu der entscheidenden Schlacht zwei unterschiedliche Ansichten. Zum einen soll, nach Alföldi, Licinius in einer Seeschlacht vor Chrysopolis im Bosporus, in Sichtweite zu Byzantion besiegt worden sein. Piepenbruck schreibt dagegen in ihrem Aufsatz, dass Licinius sich in der Stadt verschanzt haben soll. Wesentlich ist, dass dagegen Einigkeit darin herrscht, dass er im Anschluss an der Stelle seines entscheidenden Sieges der Stadt seinen eigenen Namen gab, ganz nach der Tradition griechisch-römischer Herrscher. In unterschiedlichen Quellen wird aufgeführt, dass Konstantinopel nicht die allererste Wahl Konstantins war. In der Folge der Industrialisierung erlebte die westliche Welt ökonomische, technologische und kulturelle Veränderungen in rasender Geschwindigkeit. Im Verlauf des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts wurden traditionelle Verhaltensmuster radikal aufgegeben und tradierte Werte verändert, beispielsweise während der '68er Bewegung' oder im Zuge der Frauenbewegung Anfang der 70er Jahre. Das Selbstverständnis der Bürger entwickelte sich weiter, und so waren viele der Proteste primär politisch motiviert und zielten auf mehr Gleichberechtigung. Beobachtet man solche Werteveränderungen innerhalb einer Gesellschaft, spricht man von einem 'Wertewandel', ein Begriff, der vor allem durch Helmut Klages und Ronald Inglehart geprägt wurde. In seiner häufig zitierten 'Theorie der stillen Revolution' beschreibt Inglehart die steigenden Erwartungen an die Selbstbestimmung und Selbstverwirklichung sowie an die Steigerung der nichtmateriellen Lebensqualität, beobachtet also einen fortschreitenden Wandel weg von materialistischen hin zu postmaterialistischen Werten. Sprechen Wähler rechtspopulistischer Parteien von einem Werteverlust, meinen sie jedoch vielmehr die Herabsetzung traditioneller Werte als veraltet sowie das als Bedrohung empfundene Eindringen liberaler Werte, eine Entwicklung, die sie beispielsweise durch kulturelle Vielfalt begünstigt sehen. Dies ist allerdings eine Perspektive, die nach der Theorie von Inglehart eigentlich längst überwunden sein müsste.
