Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. History records that the Olympic Games originated in ancient Greece nearly three thousand years ago, died out around 393 AD, and were triumphantly reborn in 1896, in the Greek capital of Athens. Rather less well known is how, during the intervening centuries, an assortment of British writers, romantics, sportsmen and visionaries helped nurture that revival. Indeed, as sports historian Dr Martin Polley argues in this, the 12th book in the acclaimed Played in Britain series, our nation's fascination with all things Olympian has played a pivotal role in shaping the Games as we know them today, culminating in London becoming in 2012 the first city ever to stage a third modern Olympiad. Consider, for example, that the first published use of the word `Olympian' in the English language dates from around 1590. Its author? William Shakespeare. And that the first games of the post-classical era to adopt the formal title `Olympick' took place in the Cotswolds village of Chipping Campden in 1612. It was an English traveller, Richard Chandler, who rediscovered the lost site of Olympia in 1766, and a Shropshire doctor, William Penny Brookes, who, in 1850, founded the Much Wenlock Olympian Games, an annual community festival that inspired Pierre de Coubertin to revive the Games at an international level. Other Olympic festivals surfaced in London (to celebrate Queen Victoria's accession), in Liverpool, and in the north-east town of Morpeth, while the words `Olympic' and `Olympian' became steadily more ingrained in the popular imagination throughout the Victorian era. Britain's Olympic heritage gained added momentum in the 20th century. At White City in 1908, London built the world's first modern, purpose-built Olympic stadium, while in 1948 London stepped in to save the Games by offering Wembley Stadium. Also in the late 1940s, at Stoke Mandeville hospital in Buckinghamshire, the modern Paralympics were born when sporting contests were organised for injured servicemen. Thus the 2012 Games represent the culmination of over four hundred years of British enthusiasm and ingenuity; an attachment that has left in its wake a trail of fascinating stories, characters, sites, buildings and artefacts. Leading the reader on a marathon journey, The British Olympics charts them all, making this a vital and entertaining source for anyone with an interest in the Games, in sport, and in the wider narrative of Britain's social and cultural heritage. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Beneath Dover's medieval castle and within its famous white cliffs lies a huge network of military tunnels which have been in use since Napoleonic times. It was from these tunnels in May 1940 that the evacuation of British and French troops from Dunkirk was directed. In that operation, over 338,000 men were saved and no fewer than 693 British ships took part. Throughout the Second World War the tunnels were used as command headquarters, controlling naval vessels in the Straits of Dover and the development of coastal artillery. Removed from the Secret List, the story of the Dover Tunnels and the Dunkirk evacuation can now be told. The tunnels have been opened to the public and key areas such as some of the operations rooms can be viewed as they were in the war. This meticulously researched book tells the fascinating story of the key role that Dover played in England's defence. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. After its launch in 1951, Charles Buchan's "Football Monthly" became a firm favourite amongst football fans of all ages, reaching sales of over 100,000 at its peak. It was in effect the first football 'glossy', with hand-tinted photographs on the cover and back page, some artistically vibrant as images in their own right. The magazine ran a boy's club, had a Dick Barton-style cartoon (Rex Martin) and regular articles by celebrities of the day. This colourful gift book is a selection of the best of this legendary magazine, spanning its 20-year existence. It reproduces, in facsimile format, articles, interviews, photographs, letters and advertisements from the magazine. It is a reminder of what many would consider to be football's glory days, when footballers weren't the highly paid media stars they are today, when Brylcreem was the only nod to fashion and when small boys made goalposts out of jumpers. The book will appeal to the football nostalgia market, but also to all soccer fans who are tired of today's rampant commercialism, preening players and Russian billionaires. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. There is something about the seaside that brings out the beating heart of John Bull in the English: doggedly erecting our wind-breaks to capture every vestige of a watery sun; wrestling with deckchairs; wrapping up against the determined wind on the verandas of our beach huts; accepting that 'sand' in 'sandwich' means just that! And this is all reflected in the architecture of the seaside, as captured so evocatively in Peter Williams' photographs: brightly decorated beach huts, elaborate promenade benches, strange 1930s shelters, the facades of ice-cream parlours.there is something about all these buildings and details that tells you exactly where you are, that you couldn't be anywhere other than at one of England's myriad seaside resorts! Stuffed with hundreds of colour photographs, this wonderful book is a perfect celebration of the spirit of the English seaside. English Heritage's National Monuments Record is a unique collection of over ten million images, and is continually being augmented by new photography taken by our own photographers. These two books - one drawing on archive material, the other on new and recent work - are published during the Year of the Sea to celebrate the English seaside, both as a holiday destination and as the place where buildings, street furniture and embellishments often take different and surprising forms. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Historic places across the country have shaped England and the world beyond. They are hotbeds of invention, industry and creativity and they bring our nation's story to life. In 2017 Historic England launched the Irreplaceable: A History of England in 100 Places campaign, designed to celebrate England's remarkable places. Guided by public nominations and a panel of expert judges, including Professor Robert Winston, Mary Beard, George Clarke, David Olusoga, Baroness Tanni Grey Thompson and Bettany Hughes, we compiled a list of 100 places where remarkable things have happened and shaped our collective identity as the country we are today. The book, like the campaign, is divided into ten categories ranging from Music & Literature, through Science & Discovery to Power, Protest & Progress. The final 100 selected places are all contained within this gloriously illustrated book. From the observatory in Greenwich where the modern measurement of time began, to England's oldest inn carved into the sandstone in Nottingham, the choices are surprising, intriguing and enlightening. Some are well-known and others are less familiar, but all deserve to be celebrated as landmarks in England's history. The book explains why each of these 100 places is so important. The result is a unique history of England chosen and told by the people who live here. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Photographers have taken pictures of Englands buildings and landscapes since the invention of the medium, making images of the traces of past societies as well as photographing the new buildings around them. They have done so for many reasons: to capture the picturesque; to make a living or a souvenir; to promote or to condemn; to record what is disappearing or to reveal what is normally hidden. The formats and types of photograph they have used have been, over time, just as various, from the rare and special image, such as the first calotype, to the ubiquitous digital photograph. Collectively these photographers, both famous and anonymous, have changed the way we see and understand our environment. This book features over 300 striking photographs from the Historic England Archive, an unparalleled collection of 9 million images on Englands buildings and landscapes from the 1850s to the present. Viewed collectively, its photographic collections record the changing face of England from the beginning of photography to the present day. They form a remarkable national asset, a huge memory bank that helps us understand and interpret the past, informs the present and assists with future management and appreciation of the historic environment. With informative essays and captions by the authors, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in photography, architecture, archaeology or social history. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The history of Londons West End cinemas dates back more than one hundred years. This book details all of them, in chronological order, totalling well over one hundred. The best of the West Ends cinemas were outfitted to a very high standard to match their role as showcases for new films, hosting press shows and premieres, as well as a being a magnet for film enthusiasts anxious to see films on exclusive premiere runs. Even now, when films are available everywhere at the same time, the West Ends cinemas are a vibrant attraction to visitors from all over the world as well as for Londoners having a night on the town. The oldest survivor is the Cineworld Haymarket, dating back to 1928 as a cinema. Other famous cinemas with a long history include the landmark Odeon Leicester Square and nearby Odeon West End as well as the Curzons in Mayfair and Soho, both replacing earlier picture houses. Many cinemas survive in other uses, such as the Rialto as a casino and the New Victoria as the Apollo Victoria live theatre. But here also are dozen of long vanished cinemas, some lasting only a few years and forgotten, others like the original Empire (1928 to 1961) the largest cinema ever built in the West End still living on in fond memory. There are interior views as well as exteriors of most of the cinemas, and over 50 illustrations are in full colour. This is a valuable and comprehensive addition to the history of the West End that will appeal to cinema enthusiasts as well as social historians and students of London and of architecture and design. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Please note: This product is a map. It was more than just a wall: it was a whole military zone designed to control movement across the northern frontier of the Roman province of Britannia. Great earthwork barriers survive, along with the remains of forts and temporary camps; watch-towers and fortified gates; civilian settlements, temples, cemeteries, bath-houses, roads and bridges. Stretching across the spine of England from the North-East coast to the Irish Sea, the line of the frontier extends for over 100 miles through every type of landscape: from the streets of urban Tyneside, through arable fields; along the crags of the wild Whin Sill; to the sands of the Solway, and down the coast of Cumbria. Drawing upon the extensive expertise and unrivalled archives of English Heritage, and those of its partners, this map depicts the fruits of modern archaeological research: in field survey, geophysics, excavation, and the analysis of aerial photographs. Using Ordnance Survey 1:25,000 data - the ideal scale for walkers - this revised new map shows with great clarity all the elements of Hadrians Wall, and distinguishes between those features that are visible and those that have been levelled through time. A brief text explains the remains on the ground, and how to use the map to find them including the museums and the best places to visit. This World Heritage Site is now more accessible than ever before, so see the landscape through new eyes. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Ditherington Mill is rightly celebrated as having the first iron-framed building in the world. Its highly innovative structure provided a fireproof environment for industrial processes and is a predecessor of the technologies that today pepper our cities with skyscrapers. Around the Spinning Mill other early buildings have also survived, which together make the complex a remarkable example of a textile mill from the new generation of steam-powered factories that were changing the face of Britain at the close of the 18th century. The conversion to a maltings in 1897 gave the mill a new lease of life and added further significant buildings to the Shrewsbury skyline. When malting ceased in 1987 the future of the site became an issue of great concern, not only to students of industrial architecture but also to local people who had worked in the maltings or for whom the site had become a familiar landmark in their everyday lives. Historic England believes that a detailed understanding of Ditherington Mills past should be a cornerstone of its future conservation and adaptation. Since its closure archaeologists and historians have examined every aspect of this internationally significant industrial site. This research has investigated the innovative technologies employed to create the factorys buildings and has cast light on the people some of national renown, others now all but forgotten responsible for the mills construction and operation. The story which has emerged is a rich one and is summarised in this book, the publication of which is a further demonstration of a collective commitment to securing the sites future. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
