Hardcover. First Edition, so stated. First Edition, so stated. Near Fine in Very Good+ DJ: The Book shows only minute indications of use: just a hint of shelving wear along the bottom edge of the boards and a small, very faint discolored area near the top of the front hinge; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. The DJ shows just a touch of wear to the extremities; very mild rubbing; the area near the outside edges of the front panel have been mildly blanched, due to sunning; unclipped; mylar-protected. No longer 'As New', but remains close to it. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 199pp. Chapter notes and an index are included. International Library of Philosophy and Scientific Method, Edited by Ted Honderich. Hardback with DJ. The author of this book argues for the co-ordinate status of three main approaches to moral theory: axiology, deontology, and agent morality. The book insists, in opposition to the moral sceptic and the relativist, that thorough-going justifications are possible for moral judgments, and it presents an outline of the procedures necessary for such justifications. Lawrence C. Becker (born 1939) is an American philosopher working mainly in the areas of ethics and social, political, and legal philosophy. He is the author of books and journal articles on justice, stoicism, reciprocity, property rights, and metaethics. He was an associate editor of the journal Ethics from 1985-2000, and the editor, with the librarian Charlotte B. Becker, of two editions of the Encyclopedia of Ethics. Becker is a Fellow of Hollins University, where he taught philosophy from 1965-1989, and is Professor of Philosophy Emeritus from the College of William & Mary, where he was the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor in the Humanities and Philosophy from 1989-2001.
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 191 pp. Tightly bound. Corners not bumped. Text is free of markings. No ownership markings. Good, price clipped dust jacket. There is a tear to the back of the jacket where the previous owner then put scotch tape over the tear. This copy is smyth sewn. Smyth sewing is a method of book binding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

First published in 1934. Hardback: No DJ 'as issued'. Robert Newton Flew (1886 1962) was an English Methodist minister and theologian, and an advocate of ecumenism among the Christian churches. Flew married in July 1921 Winifred Garrard (1887 1982), a Wesleyan Methodist teacher their son Antony Garrard Newton Flew (1923 2010) was to become a prominent philosopher.[5] He spent the next six years in a circuit ministry in London, where he built up strong ecumenical relations. His friendship with the Austrian Catholic theologian Baron von Hügel led him to closer study of spirituality, resulting in a book, The Idea of Perfection in Christian Theology (1934), which remained in print for many years. For this he was awarded a doctorate of divinity by the University of Oxford, the first ever for a non-Anglican. a comprehensive interpretation of Christian ethics as promulgated by Jesus, right on down through those whom Flew subsequently identifies as the most significant Christian thinkers of the last two thousand years."[7] It shows Flew to be one of several Methodist theologians in the mid-20th century to have become critical of the ideas of John Wesley on sinlessness and purity of intention: "Flew critiques Wesley's attitude to sin as offering only an inadequate account of moral evil," so that he can "posit an over-optimistic instantaneous end to the effects of sin. The result of these problems is an 'intramundane asceticism', whereby the one assured of sanctification merely endures secular life, allowing a barrier to exist between one's work and worship".The Idea of Perfection in Christian Theology (1934) is a meticulous piece of scholarship on a theme dear to Methodist hearts. Reprint Edition (1968). First published in 1934.
