Soft cover. A new book that is clean tight with some marks and notes on A numer of pages. Staging Race casts a spotlight on the generation of black artists who came of age between 1890 and World War I in an era of Jim Crow segregation and heightened racial tensions. As public entertainment expanded through vaudeville, minstrel shows, and world's fairs, black performers, like the stage duo of Bert Williams and George Walker, used the conventions of blackface to appear in front of, and appeal to, white audiences. At the same time, they communicated a leitmotif of black cultural humor and political comment to the black audiences segregated in balcony seats. With ingenuity and innovation, they enacted racial stereotypes onstage while hoping to unmask the fictions that upheld them offstage.

The narrative focuses on the pioneer generation, on the generation challenged by industrialization in the late nineteenth century, and on those twentieth~century Hoosiers whose experiences ranged from Progressive reform and the Ku Klux Klan to the growth of government power and the homogenization of culture and community. Madison pays particular attention to social, cultural, and economic as well as political issues. The major heroes and villains are placed in full sociohistorical context, from George Rogers Clark, Tecumseh, and William Henry Harrison, to D. C. Stephenson, William Jenner, Matthew Welsh, and Bobby Plump. Providing a broad factual account of Indiana's history, the book also sets out a new analytical and interpretive framework. The author argues that there has always been a distinctive Indiana way. This theme recurs throughout the narrative, particularly in showing how Hoosiers have tended toward moderate response to change. They have usually rejected radical and extreme notions and movements, preferring to savor the comfort and security that come from a respect for tradition and for the achievements of preceding generations. Hoosiers have been especially attached to traditions of individual freedom and limited government. and they have identified with small~town and rural values and with intensely partisan political parties. Always believing themselves to be part of the American mainstream, Indianans have also been proud of their distinctiveness. About the jacket illustration: The Thomas Hart Benton Murals, painted for the State of Indiana exhibit at the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago in 1933~34, represent the history of Indiana from the mound builders to modern times. When the Exhibition ended, the murals were stored in Indianapolis, then presented to Indiana University in 1940. Four panels hang in the University Theatre and two in the auditorium of Woodburn Hall, but the majority are to be found in the Hall of Murals, the entry hall of the Indiana University Auditorium. Depicted here by kind permission of the Indiana University Auditorium is a portion of the west mural, which bears the general title "Industrial Progress." We see the building of a log cabin, the old mill at Spring Mill State Park, and early methods of transportation, including the first railroad, a covered wagon, and a mule~drawn canal boat. Thomas Hart Benton was one of America's best known realist painters of the 1930s. Born in Missouri in 1889, he skillfully captured in his Indiana murals everyday symbols and popular conceptions of the Hoosier past, particularly the veneration of the pioneers.

The author uses the Indians' own words as much as possible to retell the myths~which are, he says, "as variable as they are viable" ~ and traces changing attitudes toward the deities among the Zuni, Keres, and Hopi peoples. "Pueblo Gods and Myths most noteworthy contribution is that it synthesizes much of the previous writings on the subject concentrating specifically on 'the gods and divine things.' . 'Must' reading for those interested in the Southwest, for ethnologists, and for students of comparative religion." ~ California Historical Society Quarterly. "A fascinating journey through the mind and cosmos of the Pueblo peoples, with compass points provided in analogy with ancient Greek religion, and with insights provided by such modern thinkers as Buber and Freud. This volume is a substantial contribution to the mythology of the Far West." ~Los Angeles Times. "Tyler shows us possibilities realized, a coherent harmonious society shaped and given body by people not unlike us. We rejoice." ~ The Nation. "Field experience and wide~ranging reading have given the author an unusual kind of authority. His descriptions of Pueblo rites and ceremonies, culled from interviews, observations, and other sources, blend into a decidedly fascinating account of the tribes' practices~perhaps the most readable and provocative one extant." ~Library Journal. "'Why do the Pueblos dance? An old quest for the answer is happily continued in company with one who had the capacity to absorb drumbeats and the emphatic imagination to leave the ranks of the observers and join those of the believers." ~ New Mexico Quarterly.
