A man of principle, protective of his family and unfailingly loyal to his friends, Freddie was someone who could be relied upon with complete confidence in all circumstances. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Born in South Africa in 1980 to an Afrikaner father and English mother, he made his first-class debut at the age of 17. In 1999, while playing with KwaZula Natal, he impressed former England captain Nasser Hussain and the following year signed for Nottinghamshire. He had a stunning debut season. 'If he can mainatin his first season's form, the name of Pietersen should be pencilled in for future Test squads,' was the glowing report in the Wisden Crickets' Almanack. He moved to Shane Warne's Hampshire in 2004 and went on to make his international debut in the controversial tour of Zimbabwe the same year. He soon became a cornerstone of the England side and played a key role in the thrilling victory in the 2005 Ashes, where he finished the series as the highest scoring player. In August 2008, he was appointed captain and led his adopted country to a victory in the Test against South Africa, and four wins in one day internationals. But his captaincy lasted only five short months and, after continual run-ins with the team's coach Peter Moores, he quit in early January 2009. Cocky, outspoken and undoubtedly talented, Kevin Pietersen looks sure to be a giant of the sport for many years to come. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 'Retire? You can't retire!', Sir David Attenborough told John Bartram, when the man who has been gamekeeper and senior wildlife officer for Richmond Park for the past thirty years announced his intention to step away from the role, bidding farewell to the iconic park which has been his home, the backdrop for a career many would give anything for, and a way of life for so long. During a career spanning four decades John has been the behind-the-scenes mastermind ensuring the welfare and maintenance of Richmond Park's world-famous herd of deer - widely thought of as the finest herd in captivity. Working with these fabled creatures has demanded balancing their needs with the very real, and often fatal, dangers the park's visitors pose to his herd, and John pulls no punches when it comes to his opinion on the deer's place in the scheme of things, the human 'invaders' and the collision of their two worlds. A remarkable diary chronicling the final year of John's charmed life as the guardian of Richmond Park, this memoir tells of the unique demands of each new season, and of the enormous wrench he will feel upon no longer waking up in the midst of so much unchanged and wild beauty.Park Life is a treasure trove of stories and memories, some poignant and moving, others offbeat and hilarious: from the quirk of fate and farcical interview that led to him getting the job, to living in close-quarters with the deer, the tragedy of putting down fatally wounded animals, and the annual ritual of the rut - as dependable as the rising and setting of the sun. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In the early days of flight, no one imagined the aeroplane as a weapon of war. Inevitably, the First World War proved the catalyst that was to change the face of battle for ever. But at the war's outbreak, military aircraft, most of which were slow and stable two-seat biplanes, were held to have only one useful function: reconnaissance. It was not long, however, before pilots had the idea of dropping explosives from their cockpits. Once machine guns began to be fitted to aircraft, two factors immediately became clear: reconnaissance aircraft needed to be defended, and enemy machines had to be attacked and destroyed. So was born the 'scout' (as fighter aircraft were known then), to be followed, before long, by the 'aces' who flew them. In this wide-ranging and extremely readable study of the fighter pilot's skills, training and experiences from the early days of flight, and the development of the machines they flew, the author, who has written widely on aerial warfare, takes the reader on a journey from the first flying machines in the late nineteenth century, to the development of the specialised fighter aircraft armed with one or more machine guns, and capable, by the war's end, of speeds of 140mph and more. Along the way he takes in the development of the devices that allowed a machine gun to fire through the propeller arc, the coming of aerial photography and airborne wireless, parachutes, engine design, test flying and problems of flight, including the dreaded 'spin' that killed so may pilots, and the invention of aerial tactics such as the Immelmann Turn. Here, too, are the aces, the pilots who became famous and feted at home for their exploits, at a time when newspapers were filled with ever-lengthening casualty lists from the Western Front. Some, like Germany's Manfred von Richthofen - the 'Red Baron' - Britain's James McCudden and Eddie Rickenbacker of the USA, are still well-known today, while others like Raymond Collishaw of the Royal Naval Air Service, France's Rene Fonck, and Aleksandr Kazakov of the Imperial Russian Air Service are less prominent. In 1914 it was all new, this business of flying at the enemy. It is a story of creativity, of machines, experiments, turning points, ebb and flow, heroes. Starting from almost nothing, the fighting men tried out their ideas and established the principles that ultimately made aircraft the most important weapon of all. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In this hard-hitting collection, acclaimed author Nigel Cawthorne examines ten of the most sickeningly twisted men who are still alive today. Some of them, like serial killer Dennis Nilsen and cult leader Charles Manson, are thankfully behind bars. Others, including the world's most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden, are still at large. Unbelievably, one of them, Robert Mugabe, is still clinging to the reins of power and continues to inflict suffering and economic mayhem on the desperate people of Zimbabwe. Inside this book is the gut-twisting story of Charles Taylor, the blood-soaked African general who has 'recruited' thousands of child soldiers, and one of the most shocking cases of recent years: that of Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who imprisoned and sexually abused his own daughter for almost a quarter of a century. This collection is a terrifying reminder that monsters really do exist. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. For five seasons, Walter White and Jesse Pinkman were undisputedly the greatest cooks in North America. From their humble origins as part-timers in a cramped (and decidedly unreliable) RV to the halcyon days in a state-of-the-art 'kitchen', the duo prospered, with competitors falling (sometimes explosively) by the wayside. Customers paid top dollar for their product. Connoisseurs came from all over the continent, and even as far afield as Europe, to sample their distinctive blue ice. The partners may have had their detractors but, without a doubt, they were the best of the best. Finally, their knowledge and expertise has been condensed into one easy-to-use cookbook. Everything from the Whites' celebrated cooked breakfast, ASAC Hank Schrader's delicious barbecue, Walter's mouth-watering Heisenburger and Gus Fring's delectable Los Pollos Hermanos fried chicken is broken down to its most basic elements, with step-by-step instructions, lists of ingredients and handy tips gleaned from the series. Copiously illustrated, here is the last word on how to cook like New Mexico's finest. Whether you favour precision and exact measurements, or prefer flair-cooking with a dash of chilli powder, this book has something for everyone - especially if you're 'breaking bad'. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Sir Walter Winterbottom was arguably the most influential man in modern English football. He is known as the first England team manager, but more than that he was an innovator of modern coaching, sports administrator and a man ahead of his time; a man who had a profound effect on English football and who laid the foundations for England's success in 1966. Walter managed them all, from Lawton to Charlton, and inspired many to become coaches: Ron Greenwood, Bill Nicholson, Jimmy Hill and Bobby Robson were amongst his disciples and took his gospel to the clubs they managed. Born in 1913, Winterbottom started out as a teacher and physical education instructor, playing amateur football in his spare time. He was soon signed up by Manchester United, playing his first game 1936 and winning promotion to the First Division in 1938. A spinal ailment curtailed his career, but during World War II he served as an officer in the Royal Air Force before the FA appointed him as national director of coaching and England team manager in 1946. He remains the ony manager to have taken the national side to more than two World Cup finals and was created an OBE in 1963 and a CBE in 1972 before being knighted in 1978. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The Crime Museum of New Scotland Yard - invariably known as 'the Black Museum' - houses a remarkable collection of exhibits connected with the most notorious crimes in British history. Gordon Honeycombe was granted privileged access to classified records, and reveals in this book the secrets of twenty British murders between 1835-1985. The author's painstaking research, which reaches beyond the Black Museum to other archives, as well as contemporary newspapers and similar accounts, allows him to give searching detailed accounts of murders and manslaughter committed by such infamous characters as William Palmer, Charles Peace, Donald Nielsen (the 'Black Panther'), the serial killer Dennis Nielsen, and Ruth Ellis, the last woman to be hanged in Britain. Here too are the political assassination of the Bulgarian writer Georgi Markov, and the murder by IRA bomb of four soldiers of the Household Cavalry in Hyde Park, in a work that provides a fascinating, if uncomfortable, insight into the minds and methods of those who practise murder. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This is the horrifying true story of a serial killer who left a trail of bodies across the globe. He eluded authorities for more than a quarter of a century until he was finally brought to justice after murdering British schoolgirl Caroline Dickinson in a French youth hostel. Francisco Arce Montes was a twisted, rejected loner with an addiction to murder. Only when he was finally caught, for the murder of Caroline, did the authorities uncover his trail of victims from Europe to South America. It is now believed that Montes was responsible for more than two dozen killings - his victims were always female and the attacks were all sexually motivated. Although those that knew him described him as a quiet, polite, softly spoken loner, Montes' cold, dark stare spoke volumes about the man that lay beneath. In this shocking and fascinating book, acclaimed true crime author, Wensley Clarkson, reveals the full story of this deeply disturbed sexual predator and serial murderer: how Montes was banished from his home town, how his first attack on a young girl led to a consensual relationship and to her bearing his first child, his first brushes with the law and how ultimately he managed to spread horror far and wide evading justice until now. Based on over 100 hours of exclusive interviews - including the killer himself and his shamed family, this is the definitive account of the world's only global serial killer. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
