Hardbound. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Octavo in dust jacket, 90 pp., catalogue of published works [by Helfman] Helfman was one of the most vital cantors on the mid-part of the last century. A child of the Lower East Side choral music he went on to become the musical director for uptown Reform and Conservative synagogues. In the late thirties he became the leader for all of the left Yiddish choruses. He was involved with the Brandies-Bardin camps, first in Pennsylvania and then near Los Angeles where he resettled. He was named dean of fine arts at the University of Judaism where he put together a very talented faculty. Helfman was a talented composer of religious, choral and classical music, but had his most long lasting effect as an educator.

Softbound. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Quarto, paper covers, 80 pp., b/w and color illustrations, list of binders, map, glossary, select bibliography One of the few works on this subject. Torah binders or wimpels are textiles made from the cloth which covers the new-born male during the circumcision ceremony. This is largely a phenomenon of the Jews of the German speaking lands. These cloths were cut into (usually) narrow ribbons and embroidered with a notice of the details of the birth and with decorative illustrations and designs. They were then used as a cinch to tie the two sides of the Torah scroll together when the Torah was placed back in the ark.

With a guide to the Hamburg Archive at the Western Jewish History Center by Tova Gazit. Sam Hamburg came from Mandate Palestine to California in 1920 to study agricultural technique. He never did return to live in Israel, but he prospered against great odds in California . He finally returned to Israel in 1951and began a long effort to modernize Israeli agriculture. He introduced mechanization, winning over the Israeli officials by explaining that the greater production would create manufacturing jobs to replace lost agricultural jobs. He introduced cotten manufactue in israel. He was a powerful intellect who lived much of his life on a tractor, a reluctant capitalist who remained a socialist in many ways.
