Defines content literacy as the possession of those skills needed ot construct subject matter knowledge through the processes of reading and writing. The authors content aht any concepotualization of literacy, beyond its most basic applications, is best viewed from a content-specific perspective: that the best learners from text actively engage in constructding, verifying, and extending meaning as they read. Integrating a variety of actual classroom examples, the authors emphasize the universal applicability of most content area reading techniques and show teachers that literacy is a tool uniquely defined by their disciplines --- a tool whereby knowledge is used to acquire more knowledge.
