Beck takes a break from her overgalvanized Jane da Silva series (Cold Smoked, 1995, etc.) for a plunge into the even more frenetic world of KLEG-AM, Seattle's dying also-ran classical radio station. New advertising account executive Alice Jordan, who's cadged the job from Caroline Payne Parker, the station's much-married co-owner and nominal manager, arrives on the scene to discover that the program director is a militant vinyl Luddite, the receptionist a megalomaniac, the evening announcer a has-been romeo, the overnight announcer (``Teresa, Queen of the Night'') an audiotaped misterioso nobody's ever laid eyes on, and the other owner, Caroline's brother Franklin, a resentful hothead who's ready to sell the whole kit and caboodle to the first psycho who comes up with half a million dollars. About the only person around with any business sense is ad sales manager Ed Costello, and he's dead--folded up in a Murphy bed, presumably by somebody who didn't take kindly to his experiments in prostitution and blackmail. So Alice, whose main qualification for amateur sleuthing is that she's not nuts--``weepy and neurotic, maybe, but not nuts''--ends up solving the murder, though, in keeping with the zany spirit of the enterprise, that's far from her intention. A tightly wound farce whose dim view of the station dweebs and ditzes is pursued with comical consistency to the very last line. Condition: A near fine copy in like jacket.

Quiet, cultivated, efficient, head of the political science department at a Scottish university. His uneventful days are measured out with scrupulous care until Alicia Anna Davie laughs in his face one afternoon--and his ordered world crumbles about him. There is another side to Ian Laidlaw, a side that matches the scarred horror of the left side of his face, mangled in youth by a vicious hound. This side draws Alicia into a bizarre relationship; but as she toys with ugliness and danger, Laidlaw becomes locked into an obsessive passion at once disorienting and hideously destructive. Alicia's crime is the carelessness of youth--Laidlaw's punishment reflects the dislocation of his universe. A near fine copy in like jacket.

When the affable owner of a checkered-tablecloth restaurant in Little Italy is cut down by the bullets of a pair of ski-masked thugs, 5th Precinct Police Detective Reardon has his hands too full to give a damn about some odd things going on uptown. For instance, why does a noted Madison Avenue art lover suddenly decide to sell his entire collection in an effort to raise a cool million? And why was a well-known Arab oil magnate assassinated? Almost too late, Reardon sees the connection between the deaths of a multi-millionaire and a small-time restaurateur, and the fluctuations in the international markets for crude oil, fine art, and precious metals. And now that he knows the truth, just how long has he got to live? Condition: Near fine in fine jacket.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 317 pages. Royal octavo (0 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's quarter purple cloth with silver lettering to spine over purple boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition. A first suspense novel, openly built on a base of film noir, that's a tough and smart story of love, loyalty, and betrayal in New York in WW II years. Lew Cassidy, a professional football player whose wife is trapped in Nazi Germany, finds himself captivated by Cindy Squires, the gorgeous mistress of Max Bauman, the gangster who owns Cassidy's team. Bauman, a generous and likable crook, also seems to own Lew's longtime best friend Terry teary, a fast-rising NYC detective with a taste for the high life. On the same day that the Japs bomb Pearl Harbor, Cassidy takes a tackle that ends his playing career; and while he is in the hospital recuperating, Terry takes a couple of slugs from the gun of a grief-crazed homosexual and nearly dies. When they finally make it out of the hospital, Lew with a limp and Terry with an unremoved slug, they are permanently out of the war. But they're not out of action. Lew is drawn deeper and deeper into Max and Terry's warring world of crime and closer and closer to the seductive Cindy. And everyone that he meets seems to want a piece of Lew for one bad reason or another. Lucky Luciano wants him, Thomas E. Dewey wants him, and, it turns out, the beautiful Cindy wants him. This book takes a terrible risk in pinning itself to the too-fashionable film noir genre, but the atmosphere is thick and accurate, the story solid, the mood bittersweet, and the gamble pays off handsomely. Condition: Small split in spine head. Jacket spine head small chip and tear, price clipped elese very good in a near fine jacket.
