Dominated by temples set atop two awesome pyramids, and dotted with brightly decorated buildings flanking wide boulevards, the first city in the Americas was the arbiter of taste, fashion, and especially religion for an area stretching from northern Mexico to modern Guatemala. And with its bustling markets teeming with gaily dressed people, Teotihuacan was the vital crossroads for every Mesoamerican trader. For some two and a half centuries the city held sway. Then, for reasons we cannot yet fathom, it was suddenly, totally abandoned. The rise and fall of this great city are described in Teotihuacan, which also examines the background of the area's other civilizations, notably the Olmec, Toltec, Mixtec, and Maya, and concludes with the mighty Aztec. It was the Aztecs who believed that in the year One Reed the god Quetzalcoatl would come from the east and usher in a new order. In A.D. 1519, the year the Aztecs designated One Reed, Hernan Cortes and his Spanish conquistadors landed in Mexico, and the tradition of native civilizations that had begun so brilliantly at Teotihuacan ended savagely. Supplementing the text of Teotihuacan are some 140 illustrations~more than a third in full color. The pictures range from ritual objects to everyday ware, from whimsical creations to the depiction of historical events by the peoples concerned. A special section, Ancient Mexico in Literature, contains accounts of the confrontation between European and Indian culture, as well as reports of the explorations, and the deliberations of scholars and tourists. This section includes excerpts from the works of such diverse authors as William H. Prescott, D. H. Lawrence, two anonymous Aztec poets, the distinguished contemporary Mexican poet Octavio Paz, and Cortes himself. A reference section, including a chronology of Mesoamerican history, a guide to the archaeological sites of Mesoamerica, anda selected bibliography complete the volume. Teotihuacan is a new volume in the Newsweek Book Division's series of illustrated histories, Wonders of Man. Each volume, focusing upon a well~known historical monument, is divided into three major sections: a lively and informative history of the monument, its cultural background, and its impact by a renowned and authoritative writer, profusely illustrated in color and black and white; a selection of literary excerpts about the monument; and a comprehensive reference section.
