For, while many have regarded Zionism as a positive expression of the uniqueness of the Jewish identity, of the things which separate Jews from other people, others have seen it as the means to a final emancipation for the Jewish people from all discrimination and difference. Along with the great political problems which confront the state of lsrael today, the people of lsrael also face a crisis of faith and identity, in which they must decide what Zionism actually means to them. In this lucid and timely study of the spiritual roots of Zionism, Professor Fisch argues that Israel's ideological identification with the Western liberal tradition is rooted in a fallacy; a fallacy which has obscured the real spiritual and religious motives of Zionism. During the earlier period of statebuilding the secularist views largely prevailed ~ for many the magic of Jewish independence was sufficient in itself. But these assumptions are now being widely questioned, not least by more recent immigrants who are looking for a spiritual and not just a physical liberation. It is clear that Israel's destiny is not to be that of a normal state fitting naturally into the Western pattern. In these circumstances a reformulation of the Jewish myth as a key to the understanding of lsrael's destiny has become an urgent necessity. For behind the recent political changes in Israel one can detect a revolutionary movement involving a renewal of the bond with the land of Israel and a revived sense of the Jewish people's unique role in the world.
