The book is a long overdue collection of Guy Griffith's photography, concentrating on that most interesting period from 1946 to 1953, with text by Anthony Pritchard. The book was published in 1998 as a Limited Edition of which this is Number 086 of 1000 copies, 900 of which were Standard Editions. The book is essentially an account of all the cars which have borne the Bristol name. The book is in two volumes - The Image and The Word. In The Image specially commissioned photography was taken of 40 cars while other illustrations include trams, aircraft and other products associated with the company. In The Word, Setright deals with all the cars, including technical assessments and driving impressions, the background history of the British Aeroplane Company, the contribution made by BMW, other makes of cars which used the Bristol engine, the association with Chrysler and design projects which failed to reach production, amongst other matters. The book comprises some 400 pages and over 350 photographs, illustrations and drawings, many of which have not been previously published. The result is the most comprehensive history to date of the origins, design, development, testing and production of these cars. The original goal was to update Stanley Sedgwick's 1978 work however the sheer volume of new information carried the project far beyond the initial concept.This included tracing the existence and ownership of 204 of the 208 models produced. Only 358 copies of the book were printed of which 150 were Standard Editions and the balance of 208 were Owners' Editions. This copy was recently found in as new condition in its slipcase, both bound in black buckram with gold foil blocking to the front and spine. The DB4GT not only symbolises the heyday of the road and race GT era, but it also has an illustrious history in the hands of some of the true greats including Moss, Hill and Clark. The DB4GT actually won its debut race in 1959. The book examines in detail the history of every DB4GT manufactured as well as the design and development of the car and tells of the brilliance of the craftsmen involved in producing it. This Chassis Edition is in as new condition and is Limited Edition / Chassis Number 120. The Chassis Edition was limited to a print run of 102 copies to reflect the vehicle chassis numbers. The chassis were numbered DP199 for the Prototype and 101 to 201 for the remainder.The book is bound in blue-grey soft leather with a white roundel onlaid in leather blocked with the chassis number in black. The book is presented in a solander box encased in blue and grey buckram with two colour gilt blocking and an aluminium plate engraved with the chassis number.
