Paperback. Near Fine in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to the bottom edge of the front panel; some very faint discoloration at the upper corner of the front panel, where a price sticker has been removed; the pages have tanned slightly, due to aging. The binding is square and secure; the text is clean. Free of creases to the covers. Free of creased or dog-eared pages in the text. Free of any ownership names, dates, addresses, notations, inscriptions, stamps, plates, or labels. A nearly-new copy, structurally sound and tightly bound, showing a hint of wear at one spot and a couple of unobtrusive flaws. Bright and Clean. Very close to 'As New'. This is, however, a REMAINDER, showing a small, black mark at the bottom edge of the text block. NOT a Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. (7.75 x 5.05 x 0.5 inches). 213 pages. Language: English. Virago Classics Series. First published anonymously in three parts in 1684-1687. Trade Paperback. Aphra Behn (1640 1689) was an English playwright, poet, prose writer and translator from the Restoration era. As one of the first English women to earn her living by her writing, she broke cultural barriers and served as a literary role model for later generations of women authors. She began by writing for the stage. She belonged to a coterie of poets and famous libertines such as John Wilmot, Lord Rochester. Behn wrote under the pastoral pseudonym Astrea. She devoted much of her writing to prose genres and translations. She was a staunch supporter of the Stuart line. She is warmly remembered in Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own: "All women together ought to let flowers fall upon the tomb of Aphra Behn which is, most scandalously but rather appropriately, in Westminster Abbey, for it was she who earned them the right to speak their minds." ; Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; xvii, 461 pages.
