Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book explores the ways in which Balthasar employs and adapts the thought of Sergei Bulgakov with the Trinitarian theology of Thomas Aquinas to form a kenotic Trinitarian theology that is based on the notion of Personhood as a relation of self-donating love. When we look at Balthasar's Trinitarian theology in light of Bulgakov, and particularly as a rereading of Bulgakov in light of a Thomistic Trinitarian theology, we are not only able to more clearly understand the implications of Balthasar's own Trinitarian theology but also to highlight the beauty and relevance of Bulgakov's Trinitarian contribution. This reading of Balthasar's Trinitarian theology, read in light of a Thomistic adjustment of Bulgakov, provides an excellent point of integration for an ethics that takes into account not only individual virtues and perfection but also the social/relational context of human personhood. This ethics is based in a concept of human nature bearing the imago Trinitatis and fulfilling that nature through sacramental participation and ethical extension of Christ's self-offering love.''Leamy's The Holy Trinity is an excellent example of first-rate theological scholarship. Leamy, however, is not simply exploring a narrow and specialized strand of modern academic theology. Rather she is initiating and developing theological conversations in a compellingly attractive fashion. Mining Balthasar's Trinitarian theology in relation to Bulgakov, with Aquinas in the background, is a daunting project, but Leamy brings it off. East and West meet in conversation, modern theological thought is in dialogue with medieval theological thought--all to produce an immensely rich synthesis of Trinitarian theology and Christology. . . . I cannot recommend it highly enough.''Owen F. Cummings, Academic Dean, Mount Angel Seminary, St. Benedict, OR''Professor Leamy masterfully elucidates how Balthasar's retrieval of Bulgakov utilizes Aquinas to critically appropriate Bulgakov's daring speculation on intra-triune life. Her insightful reading of these three theological geniuses, each of whom requires patient skill to interpret aright, is a feat that fellow scholars will admire. No less praiseworthy is Leamy's demonstration of how this Trinitarian theology can inspire graced human action, a practical conclusion that students will deeply appreciate.''Danielle Nussberger, Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WIKaty Leamy is Associate Professor of Moral Theology at Mt. Angel Seminary in St. Benedict, Oregon. 182 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This work employs multiple methodologies to analyze the story of the man born blind (John 9) in order to discern how this episode serves the greater purpose of the Gospel, stated in 20:31: ''so that you may trust that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and through trusting you may have life.'' The analysis of linguistic patterns; narrative structure; cultural anthropology; and an analysis of irony, humor, and wit are each employed. These are all synthesized in the final chapter, which makes an attempt to discern how an ancient performance of John 9 might look, and how such a performance might sway an ancient audience toward trust in Jesus as Messiah.''The underlying question of this illuminating study is, 'How does it work ' If John's goal is to lead people to trust in Jesus and the experience of eternal life in the present, how does the narrative actually accomplish that goal Britt Leslie sets out to answer that question through an analysis of the story of the healing of the man born blind in John 9. He does it by applying one method after another to lay bare the meaning and rhetoric of the passage until he reveals the overall impact designed to lead the audience of a performance of John to faith in Jesus and the spiritual experience of Jesus as the light of the world. Written with clarity and cogency, this study of John is a must-read book for students, teachers, and scholars alike.''David Rhoads, Professor Emeritus, Lutheran School of Theology''One Thing I Know is notable not only because it advances new insights on one of the most-discussed passages in the Fourth Gospel over the past fifty years, but also because it illustrates the emergence of new and multidisciplinary approaches that bring together and build upon the conclusions of historical, rhetorical, social-scientific, narrative-critical, and media-critical approaches to the text. Judiciously combining observations on the narrative and performative dimensions of John 9, and combining these with historical insights in dialogue with prior scholarship, Leslie underscores the value of multi-faceted readings of the text. The book is helpful not only for its synthesis of methods, but also for its accessibility.''Tom Thatcher, Professor of Biblical Studies, Cincinnati Christian UniversityBritt Leslie received his PhD from Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and is currently an adjunct professor at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He also teaches Bible in the Pastors' Course of Study for the United Methodist Church in Ohio and Indiana. 222 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This book is intended to encourage the use of comparative theology in contemporary Buddhist-Christian dialogue as a new approach that would truly respect each religious tradition's uniqueness and make dialogue beneficial for all participants interested in a real theological exchange. As a result of the impasse reached by the current theologies of religions (exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism) in formulating a constructive approach in dialogue, this volume assesses the thought of the founding fathers of an academic Buddhist-Christian dialogue in search of clues that would encourage a comparativist approach. These founding fathers are considered to be three important representatives of the Kyoto School--Kitaro Nishida, Keiji Nishitani, and Masao Abe--and John Cobb, an American process theologian. The guiding line for assessing their views of dialogue is the concept of human perfection, as it is expressed by the original traditions in Mahayana Buddhism and Orthodox Christianity. Following Abe's methodology in dialogue, an Orthodox contribution to comparative theology proposes a reciprocal enrichment of traditions, not by syncretistic means, but by providing a better understanding and even correction of one's own tradition when considering it in the light of the other, while using internal resources for making the necessary corrections.''Ernest Valea has written a book that is remarkably clear, wonderfully perceptive, and enjoyable to read. It is accessible to specialists and the general reader alike. In introducing Romanian Orthodox sources into the current debates in Christian-Buddhist studies, Valea is extremely original. . . . [This book] is highly recommended as both a significant contribution to the field and also an extremely clear and stimulating introduction to the state of the discipline.''Paul Williams, Emeritus Professor of Indian and Tibetan Philosophy, Centre for Buddhist Studies, University of Bristol''A weighty theological contribution characterized by impressive scholarly coverage of modern trends within comparative theology. Using the concept of human perfection as Buddhahood in Mahayana Buddhism and as Theosis in Orthodox Christianity, Valea is bringing the most significant voices within the two traditions into conversation, generating fresh insights and breaking new ground for Buddhist-Christian dialogue. [A] thorough, thoughtful, and thought-provoking discourse inviting the reader to engage with the Other in the pluralistic, multireligious world of today.''Parush R. Parushev, CSc, PhD, Director of the Institute for Systematic Studies of Contextual Theologies with the Centre for Just Peacemaking Study and ResearchInternational Baptist Theology Study Centre AmsterdamErnest M. Valea presented this book as his PhD thesis at the University of Wales (2013). He is the author of The Buddha and the Christ: Reciprocal Views (2008). 264 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This collection of essays is offered in admiration of and in gratitude for the work of Ernest Charles Lucas. The title of the volume acknowledges Ernest's particular areas of interest and expertise. The word wisdom comes first for two reasons: firstly because the Bible's Wisdom literature is a particular love about which Ernest has published a number of books, and secondly because wisdom is a characteristic of the man. Several of the contributions to this volume pick up the theme of biblical wisdom, while others touch on the practical application of a wisdom shaped by the Scriptures to vital contemporary issues. The second word of the title, science, reflects both Ernest's first career as a research bio-chemist and his interest as a theologian in exploring the relationship between science and faith. This area of interest is reflected in a number of the contributions to this collection, including Ernest's passionate interest in and concern about climate change. The final words of the title are and the Scriptures. Ernest has, at one time or another, taught every part of the Bible and retained a keen interest in the discipline of Biblical Studies. Once again, this is reflected in some of the contributions. There are other aspects to Ernest Lucas and among them is a love of sport, especially cricket. And so the collection ends with a reflection on this wonderful pastime.''This is a scholarly book which honors the immense knowledge and academic skill of Ernest Lucas, but it is also a playful and a prayerful book, acknowledging his faith and devotion to God. These writings from his friends and colleagues pay tribute to the fact that Ernest Lucas is someone who loves God with heart, soul, mind, and strength. Reading it will help others to do the same.''Emma Ineson, Principal, Trinity College, Bristol, UK''This remarkable collection includes papers at the forefront of biblical scholarship, thoughtful discussions of the relationship between science and faith, and an engaging theological reflection on the game of cricket! The variety and quality of the contributions reflect the wide-ranging, profound abilities of the scholar they honor, as do the eloquent and moving prayers with which each concludes.''Peter Hatton, Director of Studies, Bristol Baptist College, Bristol, UKStephen Finamore is principal of Bristol Baptist College.John Weaver is a former principal of the South Wales Baptist College and former Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Cardiff University. 280 pp. Englisch.
