There, amidst the romantic garden landscape that Monet himself helped to design - including his own house and studio, greenhouses, ponds, and a Japanese-style bridge - the most fascinating and mature works of his last forty years came into being. In this volume Sagner-Duchting examines three important series that Monet painted in the immediate vicinity of Giverny: the Grain Stacks, the Poplars, and the Early Morning on the Seine series. In addition to providing a fascinating look at the influence of Giverny and its surroundings on his work, the author discusses Monet's innovative 'open form,' exemplified by the paintings in his famous Waterlilies series. With these late works, Monet diverged from traditional pictorial ideas and came to be recognized as a pioneer of modern art." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

Architecture evolves in response to man's technological advances and environmental demands. Driven by these developments, architects can be seen as the most innovative of artists. In twenty-five beautifully illustrated chapters, this volume for general readers and architecture lovers alike identifies the most important advancements in the field of architecture, and demonstrates how these innovations influenced the development of architecture. Chapters focus on topics such as monuments to the dead and places of worship; domes; pillars and arches; towers from Pisa to Eiffel; stadia and theaters; palaces and skyscrapers. Readers will learn about the introduction of glass, steel, iron, and concrete; how buildings express ideas; and the rediscovery of antiquity. Arranged chronologically, these chapters can be studied individually to deepen our understanding of particular aspects of architecture or as a whole-to appreciate the ever changing patterns of architectural advancement." - Publisher. Paperback. Condizione: Fine. 128 pages, illustrations; 24 cm. Tight, clean copy. *** "The relationship between Camille Claudel and Auguste Rodin was one of the most artistically fruitful and passionate turn-of-the-century love affairs. When they first met in 1883, Rodin was forty-four and Claudel a promising sculptor of twenty. Despite the positive response of critics to her early work, Claudel, however, never experienced fame and success. The tragic circumstances of her life - the last thirty years were spent in a psychiatric hospital - have led to considerable speculation and interest in this enigmatic figure. To some she seemed to offer the classic example of a woman artist who was oppressed and abused by a successful man. This book examines Claudel's family background, her relationship to her parents and brother, and her behavior as documented by friends and family to determine to what extent her innate mental instability led to her eventual breakdown. What were the circumstances surrounding her commitment to an asylum and how did her family and Rodin react to her illness? Further, the author critically examines the relationship between the two artists: to what extent did they influence each other? How did Rodin really treat Claudel? Finally and most importantly, Claudel's oeuvre is investigated in terms of her biography and in relationship to her contemporaries in an attempt to evaluate her work as a sculptor and to understand the personal and artistic crisis she underwent after severing her relationship with Rodin." - Publisher. Paperback. Condizione: Fine. 126 pages, illustrations (some colour), portraits (some colour); 24 cm. Tight, clean copy. *** "Edward Hopper was one of the finest American Scene painters in the Realist tradition. His passion was to portray 'typical America'; his city- and landscapes are vivid reflections of the then contemporary American life. Several of his paintings, such as House by the Railroad (1925), Early Sunday Morning (1930), and Nighthawks (1942), have become icons of modern American art. They depict the loneliness, anonymity, and lack of variety in the daily life of ordinary people. Edward Hopper: Portraits of America examines the apparent dichotomy within Hopper's oeuvre. On the one hand, his compositions depict deserted small towns or solitary figures in empty offices, desolate houses, or hotel rooms. On the other hand, Hopper painted the landscape of New England, where he spent almost every summer with his wife Jo, as bright and tranquil. He seemed to analyze the psychological restrictions and isolation of everyday life as well as the joy and freedom of vacation. This volume superbly illustrates this dichotomy with full-color reproductions of many of Hopper's most famous compositions. It shows how, by linking fiction and reality, concealment and revelation, Hopper's images evoke an enigmatic uncertainty, which is both mystifying and fascinating." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.

This beautifully produced volume uses Beckmann's own words as an introduction to the artist s creative expression and his unwavering search for the self. Beckmann struggled throughout his life to define his identity through his paintings. He started out as an ambitious and self-confident young artist, went through a horrific stint as a medical orderly in World War I, and then became an exile in Holland and the United States. Through her careful analyses of more than fifty works, Sister Wendy illuminates Beckmann's use of symbolism as well as the strong thematic strains of his paintings and triptychs. The artist's bold use of color and line are in brilliant evidence in numerous full-color reproductions, and an extensive biography as well as several photographs offer additional insight into this strong creative presence who never failed to challenge himself or his audience with his art." - Publisher. Catalogue of the exhibition held October 9, 2011 to January 22, 2012 at the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California. Firm binding, clean inside copy. *** "Representing contemporary artists from the last half century, this unique exhibition catalog captures the spirit of a daring experiment to pair California icons with their new millennium comrades. In the 1960s and 1970s a group of aesthetic adventurers transformed L.A. from cultural desert to artistic oasis. These West Coast artists, poets, dancers, filmmakers, and photographers fomented a creative outburst that rivaled New York City's. Nearly four decades later, Southern California remains a fertile ground for some of the most exciting and daring art being made today. This book accompanying an exhibition of the same name explores the two Schools of Cool in collaborative, intergenerational pairings between John Baldessari and Shana Lutker; Llyn Foulkes and Stanya Kahn; George Herms and Sarah Cain; Ed Moses and Robert Williams; and Allen Ruppersberg and Amanda Ross-Ho. These pairs have worked together on new, collaborative installations that reveal and transcend the shifts that have taken place in the art world in the past half century-including the increasing prominence of female artists, distinct methodologies and artistic practices, and the use of new technologies. This catalog features the five installations, including paintings and works on paper, sculptures and assemblages, audio-video and interactive installations, that are the result of these collaborations, as well as insightful interviews with the curator and with the artists in which the artists offer thoughts on their own work, their collaborative process, and their projects for the exhibition." - Publisher. Profusely illustrated. *** "This text examines 100 of the most famous and popular depictions of angels in the history of art. All are illustrated in colour, together with details of each artist and the background of the work in which they appear. Gottfried Knapp demonstrates the different ways angels have been portrayed in art, how art reflects contemporary views on religion and the radical changes that have occurred in the past. Angels have long been used by artists to imbue their work with a sense of the divine. In the middle ages they were predominantly represented as men. By the time of the Renaissance, theologians had agreed upon a hierarchy for the company of heaven in which cherubim and seraphim held the highest rank. Then, in descending order, were: thrones, dominations, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels and angels. The angels were frequently depicted as women and children, and their number appeared to reflect the artist's view of the spiritual importance of the subject, particularly in manuscript and book illumination. However, the most popular have always been the baroque representations of small, fat cherubim - winged putti, high-spirited and roguish. In our century, Marc Chagall's colourful, glowing angels have given expression to human love and divine grace. The word 'angel' comes from the Greek word angelos, meaning "messenger", and save for their depiction in art, angels were considered to be bodiless minds or spirits. Angels are not restricted to Christianity; they also appear in Judaism and Islam - and always as intermediaries between God and humankind. Gottfried Knapp writes of this angelic world. Whether in painting or in sculpture, in book illumination or in film, in fiction or in non-fiction, angels have continued to fascinate and delight artists and art lovers through the ages." - Publisher.
