Valerian Albanov was the navigator aboard the Russian ship Saint Anne. The Expedition was poorly managed and poorly mapped. The ship became icebound, men were giving up hope when Albanov gained, permission to try an overland trek to Novaya Zemlya where food might be found. Albanov and one other man survived.
