"Surveillance" is a deftly and humanely worked out story of post-millenial Seattle. I found particular pleasure in the fact that it flouts a rule strictly enforced in writing workshops and book groups across the county (not to mention in the minds of people who think that Hollywood actually produces art): "Surveillance" fails to conclusively conclude. I could make an argument that the conclusion is rather too conclusive, but let me simply say that the events of the ending are rather too possible for those of us on the West Coast. They are also are in key with some of the atmospherics along the way, and so document to a degree the worries of the liberal imagination in these times. Until the ending, Surveillance quite skillfully inhabits the world of the "well-made novel", weaving four (and more) stories together gracefully, each of which changes perspective on the topic as whole. Particularly impressive is the portrait of Alida, Lucy Bengstrom's eleven-year old daughter, who is individual enough to stay in the mind, but with nary a speck of preciousness. But it is in the portrait of Lucy that "Surveillance" succeeds the most. "Waxwings" was mostly the story of a professor with an age and opinions close to Raban's, but Lucy is a 50 something single mother whose certainties and confusions ring true. Ultimately, each of the major character is compelling and treated sympathetically. There is dread in "Surveillance" and dis-ease, but the reason for it is deep-seated, suggested rather than discussed.

It takes a lot for a new writer to break into the crowded genre of British police procedurals. Even a good story may not be enough. But a good story with a badly damaged-but-redeemable Detective Chief Inspector might just do the trick. In this case, the damage is a doozie! DCI Mark Lapslie has just been called back from "indefinite sick leave" because he has a form of synaesthesia that causes him to taste sounds, e.g., his sergeant's voice tastes to him like lemon with a hint of grapefruit, but the voices of his children made him sick. And the voices of his colleagues at the busy station house taste like uncooked meat. Thus, he lives alone in as much silence as he can manage. He is called back to work in a last-ditch attempt to see if there is any way to create a useful place for him on the force before putting him on permanent leave. And he lands in the middle of a strange series of deaths of lonely old women. Coincidence? Murder? Serial killer? One leads to another and Lapslie and his sergeant always seem to be just a step behind. And the question nags: "Could a woman really visit so many horrors on these sweet, abandoned souls?" It makes you want to call up your elderly aunts and grandmothers to make sure they're OK and haven't been befriended by any overly solicitous do-gooders! I really like Lapslie and Co. and the writing is crisp, with a fine pace. Make no mistakes, though. This is also a tough murder mystery and not-so-nice things happen to presumably undeserving people. This is a good first mystery in what looks like a promising series.

The interviews are wonderful and Miller is not only a unique stage director for theater and opera but a fine interviewer as well. The Geertz interview is worth the price of the book. The other interviews are essential reading for people interested in Miller's unique views on theater and life. I've used it for years in my teaching and my study of character. Each of the interviews are interesting and unique.as unique as Miller's view of the works for the stage have been over the years. They ought to bring out a second edition if nothing else, to keep these excellent interviews available in the world. This is a must for people of the stage and opera world and it's a big help for an approach to Indigenous Art as well. (See the Geertz Interview).

Most Americans eat genetically modified food on a daily basis. Yet many of us are barely aware that we're eating something that has been altered. Food labels do not inlude information on ingredients that have been genetically modified, and the subject has received surprisingly little media coverage. Even as genetically engineered foods spread throughout America, most consumers abroad have refused to eat them. Opposition to genetically engineered food is now beginning to surface in the United States, where biotechnology is becoming a major issue for the new century. Here is the story of how these new foods, most of which are engineered either to produce or to withstand heavy doses of pesticides, quietly entered America's food supply. The author explores the potential of this new technology to enhance nutrition and cut farmers' expenses. She also reveals the porcess by which regulatory agencies decided to allow the biotechnology industry to sell its products without first submitting them to thorough testing for possible long-term threats to consumer health and the environment. Hart has talked to scientists, farmers, industry memebers, and activists, and she has gained unprecedented access to the inner chambers of the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration, where the crucial decisions have been made to allow these foods into our stores. Combining a balanced perspective with a sense of urgency, this is a revelatory guide to a subject of paramount importance.

In this timely book William Ryan, author of Blaming the Victim, analyzes how and why the "vulnerable majority" of Americans, though "created equal," lives under the permanent and shaming threat of inequality. While noting that we formally exalt equality in such documents as the Declaration of Independence and even in everyday expressions about fair play, equal opportunity, and the common good, Ryan graphically shows how we nevertheless "play the game" in various spheres of public life by rules that divide people into winners and losers, superior and inferior rules that, in short, institutionalize inequality. A critique of this inhospitable system of beliefs, Equality also suggests that the foundations of true equality are not alien to the American tradition.

Williams' writing is rooted in the American West and has been significantly influenced by the arid landscape of Utah. Her work focuses on social and environmental justice issues ranging from ecology and the protection of public lands and wildness, to women's health, to exploring our relationship to culture and nature. She writes in the genre of creative nonfiction and the lyrical essay. This might best be described as "eco-erotica".
