Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Today, a rich tapestry of local recipes graces our tables at the Cape. Like a fine blended wine, Cape cuisine offers complexity, richness and a host of subtle and exotic nuances to delight the most discerning and adventurous of palates. For more than three centuries, the Cape has continued to provide for the needs of visitors from all parts of the world, making it truly worthy of its title of old, 'Tavern of the Seas'. The flavours of the Cape were initially influenced by the first settlers, the Dutch who arrived in 1652. Within two weeks of arriving in South Africa, they laid out a vegetable garden and cultivated seeds that they brought with them from abroad. The Strandlopers, French Huguenots, Malay slaves, Germans and the English all contributed to the melting pot of flavours that are still in evidence today. Cape flavours and traditions is a little book of gastronomic delight. It brims with history, unique South African recipes, and will hopefully inspire you to cook flamboyantly. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. This sparse, disturbing novel reflects the past, present, and future of a woman, Anna P, who lives on an island off the coast of Italy but can no longer remember how she got there. She comes from South Africa but has almost no memories of the place or people there. The only person she has any relationship with is a sex worker whom she pays by the hour. She has abusive encounters with unknown men, and it is not clear whether she occasionally kills these men or not. It is only when she begins to connect emotionally with a young boy in her accidental care that she finds some value in herself, some place which she will not allow to be abused, and her life gradually changes. This meticulously crafted debut asks a number of difficult questions about the nature of memory: Who are we if we lose our memories? What does it mean to have no identity? And if we have no identity, no sense of ourselves, how can we make any ethical choices? The answers may not comfort the reader, but The Story of Anna P, as Told by Herself grounds such existential ponderings in a rich imaginative landscape that will linger with the reader long after the last page is read. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Good. This collection of essays by some of South Africa's foremost HIV/AIDS writers, doctors, and activists takes readers down the rabbit hole of AIDS denialism when thousands of people died unnecessarily as their treatment became the subject of intellectual debate by politicians. Recounting the democratic, postapartheid government's questioning of the link between HIV and AIDS and the contention of the inefficacy of antiretroviral drugs, this history stands as both a chronicle of the past and a cautionary tale for the future. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Jacana Media is proud to make this important book available again, now with a completely new introduction. First published by Oceanbooks, New York and Melbourne and University of Natal Press, Pietermaritzburg in 2001, the book was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award in 2002. In the public imagination the struggle that saw the end of apartheid and the inauguration of a democratic South Africa is seen as one waged by black people who were often imprisoned or killed for their efforts. Raymond Suttner, an academic, is one of a small group of white South Africans who was imprisoned for his efforts to overthrow the apartheid regime. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In association with Getaway Magazine, share in the spirit of the readers of Getaway as they journey through these hilarious, poignant, silly, ridiculous and often bewildering signs. This, the third journey into public oddity, includes some Chinglish (Chinese English) corkers. The first book hit the presses as Funny Signs, although at the time we had no idea it would be so enthusiastically received, going into five reprints. It also produced a flurry of ever more funny signs which, in 2004, led to another book, More Funny Signs. Writing in that edition, then Getaway editor David Bristow called it 'a tribute to the readers of Getaway, who share with us all other readers the spirit of their journeys through these hilarious, poignant, silly, ridiculous and often bewildering signs.' It's amazing how many people go to considerable trouble to tell other people wacky things on boards - and often get the message so delightfully wrong doing it. We at Getaway are sure you'll enjoy our third journey into public oddity. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Ben Trovato is a man of letters, incisive wit and occasional lapses of judgment. He is a writer who refuses to be restrained within the conventional boundaries of fiction and non-fiction and his words range across a murky middle ground that, like the man himself, is not easily identified. In his writings he reaches out to rich and powerful people, only some of whom are in jail. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. I Remember Nelson Mandela is a collection of remembrances from those who worked with, for and beside Mandela. More than one hundred individuals, from household staff to bodyguards and presidential advisors, have offered their memories, which provide warm, poignant, and often humorous insights into what it was like behind the scenes with one of the most beloved political figures the world has seen. The collection is the dream-child of Mrs. Graca Machel who, some months after Nelson Mandela's passing on December 5, 2013, met with former members of his staff to thank them for their service. Listening to their stories inspired the creation of this book, providing readers with a glimpse into the man behind the title. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. A shrewd yet soulful novel, Paperless is set in Oxford and revolves around three groups in the university town: the African students who entered the country legally on student visas, the blue-collar South African workers who overstayed their visitor visas and are illegal, and black Britons who are an enigma to the Africans. As the chief protagonist Luzuko Goba navigates these worlds, his relationship with his former political exile father who has just died is revealed. This is a book about migrants, legal and illegal, out of time, on the wrong side of the UKs department of immigration. They are paperless. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. In this jaw-dropping classic of prison escape literature, Tim Jenkin tells of how he, Stephen Lee and Alexander Moumbaris, using a series of hand-made wooden keys, got through nine locked doors inside Pretoria Central, taking them to Mozambique and finally to London. This fast-paced thriller begins with Jenkins Cape Town childhood and the growth of his political awareness, his university days and his friendship with Stephen Lee. Both men left South Africa after university for London to join the African National Congress. Jenkin and Lee, after training in London, became expert pamphlet bombers in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and it was after several successful years of raising awareness about apartheid and the ANC that they were caught and eventually sentenced to 12 years in jail. It is after Lees father visits his son in prison, bringing him a copy of another escape classic, Papillon, that Jenkin begins to seriously form an escape plan. Months and months of planning, testing, failing, testing again and lucky breaks meant that, finally, the escape was on. The recently late Denis Goldberg was a friend and supporter of the men, and kept a warder busy as they began their escape. Apart from locking the doors behind them, they never looked back.
