Die «Holzkunde» wendet sich in erster Linie an die Fachleute in der Forst- und Holzwirtschaft; sie ist Grundlage für die Vorlesungen in Holzkunde und Holz technologie, wie sie im forstwirtschaftlichen Studium an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule in Zürich vermittelt werden. Den Anstoss zur schrift lichen Fixierung haben die Studierenden der Abteilung für Forstwirtschaft ge geben; die «Holzkunde» möge auch ihnen einen Dienst erweisen. Die Mit-Teilungen der drei Bände wollen im Sinne Werner WEBERS (1972) auf genommen werden als «Teilen der Weg-Erfahrungen» und Ansatzstellen für neue Gespräche sein.

They then computed the Fourier coefficients of these forms in terms of period integrals and L-functions. In this book the authors take an alternate approach to these theorems and generalize them to the setting of Hilbert modular varieties of arbitrary dimension. The approach is conceptual and uses tools that were not available to Hirzebruch and Zagier, including intersection homology theory, properties of modular cycles, and base change. Automorphic vector bundles, Hecke operators and Fourier coefficients of modular forms are presented both in the classical and adèlic settings. There were two workshops, October 14-25 and November 18-29, with more than 60 participants giving 70 talks. The titles of all talks are given at the end of this volume. Here we included 22 papers prepared by the authors especially for this volume, while the material of the other talks are published elsewhere. The semester was sponsored by the Soviet Academy of Sciences and UN ESCO. Since the new building of the Euler Institute was not ready at that moment, the sessions were held in the old building of the Steklov Mathemati cal Institute in the very center of St. Petersburg. Members of the staff of the Euler Institute were doing their best to organize properly the normal processing of the conference-not a simple task at that time because of the complications in the political and economical life in Russia just between the coup d'etat in August and the dismantling of the Soviet Union in December. The papers are mostly devoted to the theory of Toeplitz and model operators. These subjects are considered here from various points of view. Several papers concern the relationships of Toeplitz operators to weighted polynomial approximation. Namely, two papers by B. Solomyak and A. Volberg intensively treat the problem of spectra! multiplicity f~r analytic Toeplitz operators (which are, in fact, multiplication operators) and my paper can serve as an introduction to the problem. This theme of multiplicities is continued in a paper by V. Vasyunin where the multiplicity of the spectrum is computed for Hilbert space contractions with finite defect indices. V. Peller's paper deals with a perturbation theory problem for Toeplitz operators. In a paper by D. Yakubovich a new similarity model for a class of Toeplitz operators is constructed. S. Treil' presents a survey of a part of spectral function theory for vector valued function (Szego-Kolmogorov extreme prob!ems for operator weights, bases of vector rational functions, estimations of Hilbert transform with respect to operator weights, the operator corona problem). As a concluding remark I dare only note that the whole collection convinces us once more without a doubt of the fruitfullness of the natural union of operator theory and complex analysis (if at all the union of these fields is at all different from their intersection). 421 pp. Englisch.

The participants of this seminar agreed in the general opinion that the transport properties of charged particle systems starting from ionized gases and ending with liquid metals should be interpreted in a unique way. The basic method of such a uni fied theory which is still in 'status nascendi' nowadays, should be the statistical physics of systems with Coulombic interactions. The first two chapters of this volume are devoted to mainly experimental aspects in investigating high density plasmas. After transport theory is presented in chapter 3., two special problems are considered being of interest in the theory of high density plasmas: the problem of bound states in kinetic theory (chapter 4.) and the theory of liquid metals (chapter 5.), which may be considered as weakly coupled nonideal plas mas.
