In the last two decades, some extensions of the finite difference method to irregular networks have been described and applied to solving boundary value problems in science and engineering. For instance, 'box integration methods' have been widely used in electro nics. There are several papers on this topic, but a comprehensive study of these methods does not seem to have been attempted. The purpose of this book is to provide a systematic treatment of a generalized finite difference method on irregular networks for solving numerically elliptic boundary value problems. Thus, several disadvan tages of the classical finite difference method can be removed, irregular networks of triangles known from the finite element method can be applied, and advantageous properties of the finite difference approxima tions will be obtained. The book is written for advanced undergraduates and graduates in the area of numerical analysis as well as for mathematically inclined workers in engineering and science. Publication of the proceedings started with the second meeting; the two resulting volumes were published by Springer Verlag, Vienna, under the series Cism Courses and Lectures. Unilateral Problems appear as a singular example of confluence of interests: they are the object of the attention of pure and applied mathematicians, of specialists in Continuum Mechanics and engineers. The idea which gave origin to this series of meetings was that of putting together people coming from such different fields. The result was an extremely fruitful exchange of experiences; it contributed, we believe, to the improvement of the knowledge in the area. It is probably more efficient to present such material after a reasonable competence in (at least) linear algebra and calculus has already been attained - but at this stage those not specializ ing in numerical mathematics are often interested in getting more deeply into their chosen field than in developing skills for later use. An alternative approach is to incorporate the numerical aspects of linear algebra and cal culus as these subjects are being developed. Long experience has persuaded us that a third attack on this problem is the best and this is developed in the present two volumes, which are, however, easily adaptable to other circum stances. The approach we prefer is to treat the numerical aspects separately, but after some theoretical background. This is often desirable because of the shortage of persons qualified to present the combined approach and also because the numerical approach provides an often welcome change which, however, in addition, can lead to better appreciation of the fundamental con cepts. The organizing committee consisted of W.N. Everitt (Birmingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec served efficiently an'd enthusiastically as secretary to the con ference. The meeting was attended by 50 participants from 16 countries. In his opening address, W. Walter had to report on the death of five colleagues who had been active in the area of inequali ties and who had served the mathematical community: P.R. Beesack, G. Polya, D.K. Ross, R. Bellman, G. Szegö. He made special mention of G. Polya, who had been the last surviving author of the book InequaZities (Cambridge University Press, 1934), who died at the age of 97 years and whose many and manifold contributions to mathematics will be recorded elsewhere, in due course. Inequalities continue to play an important and significant role in nearly all areas of mathematics. The interests of the participants to this conference reflected the many different fields in which both classical and modern inequalities continue to influence developments in mathematics. These Proceedings form arecord of most of the papers pre sented at the Symposium. The topics treated cover different problems on multivariate approximation theory such as new results concerning approxima tion by polynomials in Sobolev spaces, biorthogonal systems and orthogonal series of functions in several variables, multivariate spline functions, group theoretic and functional analytic methods, positive linear operators, error estimates for approximation procedures and cubature formulae, Boolean methods in multivari ate interpolation and the numerical application of summation procedures. Special emphasis was posed on the application of multivariate approximation in various fields of science. One mathematician was sorely missed at the Symposium. Professor Arthur Sard who had actively taken part in the earlier conferen ces passed away in August of 1980. It is the third meeting in the series started three years ago in which we tried to put together mathematical physicists from the member and non-member countries of JINR with their colleagues from soviet universities and institutes using this international centre as a convenient basis. As in the previous cases, new faces, subj ects and ideas appeared but the spirit remained the same, relaxed and inspirative. Among this conference contributions, a majority should be listed in the 'orderly' category. Being more specific, this means mostly various aspects of the theory of Schroedinger operators that has been always a core of quantum mechanics. In spite of the fact that it is studied already for several decades, there are still many interesting problems to solve as some of the lectures collected below witness. At the same time, the theory extends to some new areas motivated by physical problems ; let us mention Schroedinger operators in complicated spatial domains appearing in some parts of solid-state physics or various models using the concept of contact interactions. Our world is far from perfect and to keep a perfect order is difficult not only in everyday life but also in most physical systems. Their existence was implied by Fatt and Katz in 1952, when they described the action of acetylcholine at the muscle endplate as producing 'a large nonselective increase of ion permeability, i.e. a short circuit'. However, in many countries their popularity is waning as prescribers become more aware of problems with unwanted effects and with rebound and withdrawal syndromes. The earlier benzodiazepines were long-acting, and it was thought that their shorter-acting successors would have important advantages. Other developments include partial agonists and partial inverse agonists, compounds acting on the benzodiazepine-GABA macro molecular site although not as a typical benzodiazepine, and anxiolytic agents acting on 5-HT pathways directly. I shall review the problems of unwanted effects and dependence, mainly from an epidemiological view point, and then relate the pharmacological properties of the newer com pounds to possible differences in their clinical profile of adverse effects. Adverse behavioural effects Benzodiazepines are used, inter alia, as anxiolytics and hyp notics. The latter use exploits the sedative actions which occur at higher than anxiolytic doses. The sedation should disappear by the time the patient wakes up. The application of DNA finger printing to forensic and legal medicine has guaranteed a high public profile for this technology, and indeed, scarcely a week goes by with out the press reporting yet another crime successfully solved by molec ular genetics. Less spectacularly, but equally importantly, DNA typing methods are steadily diffusing into an ever wider set of applications and research fields, ranging from medicine through to conservation biology. To date, two DNA fingerprinting workshops have been held in the UK, one in 1988 organised by Terry Burke at the University of Leicester, and the second in 1989 at the University of Nottingham, co-ordinated by David Parkin. Non-invasive NMR technologies have been developed to monitor in vivo the energy level of tissues based on determination of the concentrations of adenine nucleotides, phosphate and phosphate esters. Thus it became clear that the capacity of oxidative phosphorylation adapts itself to the ATP demand which changes continuously with the physiological state in various tissues. The objective of this conference was to provide a unique opportunity for scholars working in these two related and rapidly growing fields to participate in the exchange, integration, and synthesis of new concepts and ideas, to engage in constructive criticism and to initiate new collaborative research projects.
